Re: Dbrand Admits Its Joy-Con Detachment Response Was "Spectacularly Terrible"

DarkTron

Dbrand were threatening people who were attempting to refund (and later chargebacking when Dbrand were initially refusing) and outright stating that they'd prefer if those people were never Dbrand customers again, it'll be interesting to see how they're going to walk back those comments now they've outright admitted the problem was valid.

Re: Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour Trailer Highlights New Minigames & Tech Demos

DarkTron

@Nintendo_Thumb it's doing what Astro's Playroom did in 2020 but to a lesser extent, it's paid content for what is essentially a demo, and the game locks content behind the purchase of the accessories (some of which cost $80). It's a demo that was re-priced to be a quick cashgrab, it's the type of software you would expect to be included for free, and as others (including me) have said, Astro's Playroom did the same to a higher scale for free.

Re: Don't Worry, 'Ori And The Blind Forest' Dev Probably Isn't Shutting Down

DarkTron

From the reviews I've been reading, the latest build has the following problems:

  • Fast travel only works to the most recent beacon, which are not spread out evenly through a level, meaning that if your objective is in a level you've already beaten, you have to replay it up until the objective
  • Basically no codex for in-game effects and descriptions. In this type of game (where you're aiming for specific items to enhance builds), this is a detriment and you basically trial-and-error every effect to see what it does.
  • Weapon pick-ups don't preview what the differences in power/effects the new weapon has unless it's picked up and checked in inventory.
  • Logical issues that break immersion (e.g. Heavy Armor - usually the tank in other games of the genre - only defends against singular types whereas Light Armor grants both a speed and resistance against all types, dual-handed weapons still give the option for an off-hand weapon even if it wouldn't be physically possible - like a dual-gauntlet user being able to use a bow (itself a two-handed weapon)).
  • Mobile-game-like timer requirements on in-game quests and resource generators

The biggest issue is the game was advertised as being an MMO (or at least having MMO-esque co-operation mechanics), and then later pushed to "first patch after EA launches". A year later, there still isn't these mechanics, nor are they anywhere in any published roadmap. Fundamentally, the game that was advertised has not yet been delivered.

Re: Nintendo Says AI-Generated Images "Were Not Used" In Mario Kart World

DarkTron

@CadErik Someone needs to learn the concept of isometric viewpoints and perspective. You're counting an extra bar on the closer side only because more of the bridge is seen on that side (the supporting cable dips down way more than the one in the background, which also exposes an extra support beam). In reality, both sides have the same amount of bars (3) and are approximately similarly-spaced. Calling out AI art is fine, but those reasons are completely wrong.

Re: The Company That "Leaked" Switch 2 Is Being Sued By Nintendo

DarkTron

@Jester676 Nintendo have a partnership with a 3rd-party accessory maker (Hori). From the context of them, they've worked hard to secure this deep partnership, then a second company comes out and starts claiming theyre also officially supported and have been given access to early Switch 2 design specs in order to make their accessories too. This can also damage anyone who did attempt to gain access to this for other reasons (developers) and didn't, yet see a random accessory maker who aren't even the main ones claim they have it. There's an actual case here, Genki clearly are profiting off this deception, and at the very least were not given official specs from Nintendo so shouldn't have been able to start making accessories until such a time as they received an official console (which was more than likely after release), and as such have gained something they should never have.

Re: "Frustrating" Nintendo Cert Process Causes Last-Minute Switch Delay For 'Old Skies'

DarkTron

@Ryu_Niiyama From my summary:

1). He submitted an early build of the game
2). Later on, he submitted a "patch" (in reality, adding in a lot of fixes and assets)
3). Nintendo reviewed the build submitted (1) and not the build with the patch (2).
4). Nintendo told them that (1) wasn't in a playable state. Dev told them to use (2) as that was a more finalised version.
5). Nintendo told them that (1) was the build to be reviewed, and that (2) added in so much additional content it should have been its own submission.
6). Nintendo rejected the build, and told them to re-submit (2) over as a new build for release.

All in all, this is very standard, and is being blown out of proportion by an anti-Nintendo mindset, when in reality it's "Nintendo are being strict on their submissions" at best (and again, understandable considering that this will also be available on Switch 2, and we're in the run up to the console's release), and "the dev is the one at fault for this" in the more neutral position.

Re: "Frustrating" Nintendo Cert Process Causes Last-Minute Switch Delay For 'Old Skies'

DarkTron

@JohnnyMind this opinion is objectively wrong, and puts further onus on the consumer identifying low-tier and AI-generated content rather than Nintendo (who, as owners of the platform, are the ones that SHOULD be reviewing content in the first place). Based on some of the wording, I actually think Nintendo's in the right here: the patch wasn't a bug fix, it was actively adding in content that should be present in a day-1 release, and the dev failed to articulate that this was the case (in reality a patch that adds in content that would be expected in the base release isn't just a quick fix). Nintendo effectively said "your original submission was too broken, your "patch" is too substantial, and you're claiming that the submission + patch constitutes the day 1 release, so make a new submission of the finished build". This is actually good management.

Re: What's Palworld Dev's Defence Against Nintendo's Lawsuit? Pikmin 3, Apparently

DarkTron

@JohnnyMind to be contrasting, it is actually very right for companies to copyright gameplay mechanics (provided the use case isnt something actually generic), its the withholding of the mechanic when not being used is when its not OK (Nemesis being a prime example), but you can't argue Pokémon wasn't using the mechanics in question, nor is it unfair that Nintendo (a company with partial ownership of Pokémon) is using them. The Palworld claim that it should be fair use is nonsense; a lot of the games they mention aren't using the mechanics in the same way, Nintendo can't be blamed for using the mechanics they partially own, and Pocketpair are literally claiming Pokémon using the mechanics in different games in the same franchise should allow Palworld to use them too.

Re: Best 4K TVs For Nintendo Switch 2

DarkTron

Making a whole article about non-Nintendo items, with a very weak link ("you need aTY to play games" isn't that strong a reason, it's very basic), just so you can put referral links for $900+ items is a very scummy move.

Re: Nintendo & Pokémon Company Had An "Adversarial Relationship", Say Former NOA Staffers

DarkTron

Why Nintendo Life continues to give these unassociated whackjobs a platform to advertise their podcast is beyond me at this point. They are constantly misinformed about the very company they're profiting off information from, it doesn't help that these statements are the most weakly-worded opinion pieces that specifically allow for detraction of any and all statements the second someone with actual (official) information comes to contradict them. Me saying the exact same statement as they did (word-for-word) holds the exact same weight, brevity and official as they do (we're both not Nintendo employees, and we both have been found out to be directly lying about the inner workings of Nintendo in the past - them directly lying about Nintendo's stances on "Nuzlockes" and other challenge runs, me claiming my uncle works there).

Re: Palworld Developer Pocketpair Changes Pokémon-Like Summoning Mechanic

DarkTron

@Avaloner the argument is more that the Gen 1 designs are copied off Dragon Quest monsters (when in reality they're either based off real-life animals, Japanese myths, or just general fantasy) more that the gameplay is copied from Dragon Quest V (which did the gameplay style first, but over time has become distinct from what Pokémon ended up doing).

Re: Pokémon TV Is Making Its Grand Return As An Official YouTube Channel

DarkTron

@JohnnyMind hard to find in all the uploads, but they've posted a few full episodes over the years (most recently episode 1 of Horizons, and a few other first-of-the-season episodes). This seems to be more on the scale of what Yu-Gi-Oh! did (they've uploaded 3 full series to YouTube, and have uploaded one season of a 4th).

Re: Random: Pokémon Fan Crunches The Numbers To Settle Alpha Sapphire's "Too Much Water" Debate

DarkTron

@soupwoman People looking back now seem to have forgotten just how hated IGN reviews could be, this was just around the point where the narrative-driven games (like Last of Us) were getting complete praise while anything else was lowly reviewed, so there was already a negative mindset ( it was almost a meme to trash IGN reviews). Add to that existing low expectations of the IGN reviews to begin with with regards to Pokémon remakes (they had previously given HeartGold a 5/10, with a demeriting point simply for being a remake), and realistically anything less than a 9/10 would've been seen as controversial. I actually did read the review recently (revisitng Alpha Sapphire and wanted to get into the mindset), and while the review isn't written poorly, and the writer clearly is experienced with the game, it just isn't that good a review. There's literally only one paragraph that actually talks about the game itself (the article mostly talks about features from XY brought over, or complaining about HMs still being a thing, without actual criticism of the game - you know, the stuff want to know), and it's just a negative statement about the water (the very thing "too much water is drawn from").

Re: Random: Kit & Krysta Discuss The "Drama" Behind The Switch Reveal Trailer

DarkTron

Is NintendoLife's main goal now to prop up Kit and Krysta's whole channel? This is barely anything note-worthy that hasn't already been said (in fact, it's basically the exact same thing as the last K&K article about Mario hiding the Switch reveal, or basically any production of anything ever - "we didn't know going in if it would work" isn't a revelation).

Re: Retailer GAME Reportedly Ending In-Store Sales Of Physical Games And Hardware

DarkTron

@RupeeClock while it isn't an exact fit, it's exactly what's happening in Ireland with Sports Direct; there's a gaming section in most SDs and an online component through their website for ordering games (although it's still in very early stages). I imagine in the event they convert to this model, the "GAME" brand will just refer to the department that handles the gaming section of whatever Frasers Group website it's in.

Re: New Nintendo Nendoroids Revealed At Smile Fest 2024

DarkTron

@NFrealinkling chibi-fied posable figurines that come with a multitude of different parts. Very good in terms of quality, but mileage varies depending on what's being converted (e.g. aniem characters get dimensions reduced). Kirby generally looks very good in the style because they're already a small character.
