It runs very well, around 40fps, on Steam Deck. I had started the game a few years ago on PC, but only got around to finally finishing it this year, thanks to the Steam Deck and especially it's sleep/resume feature.
I think it would struggle immensely, or require a lot of downgrades, for Switch, so maybe a Switch 2 port? Not that I would buy it again.
Nintendo DS in 2005, man, those were the days. I'll always remember how the Nintendo DS basically dominated E3 2005. If you missed that era, you really missed a golden time in Nintendo. It was a magic time in gaming that I haven't quite felt with the Switch. Iwata was still alive, Nintendo's blue ocean strategy was in full swing, the memes, especially with Reggie, were actually great. Loved everything about playing niche, little adventure games like Trace Memories, etc, back then, or importing Japanese games, like Daigasso! Band Brothers, and Osu! Tatakae Ouendan, etc.
In their goal to become the next Disney, the fear I have is they become too influenced by Hollywood culture, itself, and start to self censor and sanitise themselves to cater to modern western ideology. For example, they may start to censor or remove games deemed too risqué from their platform, or they may censor niche fanservice, Japanese style games in the same manner Sony did.
To be honest, I don't really care, so long as it's a Switch 2 launch title. Splatoon is basically all I play nowadays (at least this past year) on Switch.
Most people will forever associate Veronica Taylor as the original, iconic and memorable English VA of Ash from the 90's, not the one from 2006 onwards, which by then, the show wasn't quite as cutting edge.
I think we'll start to see more "Americanisation" or "Disney-fication" of Nintendo, which is not a good thing.
For example, I think they'll start to make their platform more squeeky clean and adhere more to Western sensibilities, by censoring or removing Japanese or risqué games, similar to what happened with Sony.
I maintain the belief that if it's not simply called "Nintendo Switch 2" it will face the same problem the Wii U did and confuse people (casuals), who will ignore it, thinking it's just a mere upgrade.
I also think Nintendo have run out of new ideas/gimmicks, and it will basically just be a more powerful Switch. The only genuinely cool thing Nintendo could do is by doing something VR related with it? But that would require a HD screen and other costly things to get right.
I don't know - history has shown that every time Nintendo makes a follow-up console, it has sold dramatically worse than the previous, and I fear the same will happen with their next system...
Sadly, people are stupid, and will blindly buy any Pokémon game, even one that's as graphically terrible, rushed and lazy as this. "But it's open world and modernised now" Wow, so? What good is that when it literally feels awful to play? There is no excuse or need to white-knight; Pokémon is a multi-billion dollar franchise, and these games are their flagship product. Pokémon is not going to die if you don't buy this year's game. But by buying this year's game, you are rewarding them for their lackluster product.
So basically, Sony is calling Nintendo a "kiddy" company: "[Nintendo] focuses on family-friendly games that are very different from PEGI 18 FPS games"
Sony considers Nintendo to be a "less close and less effective" competitor to PlayStation: "Microsoft wants PlayStation to become like Nintendo, so that it would be a less close and less effective competitor to Xbox"
The fact that Sony came to this conclusion, says more about them and how they view Nintendo.
Nintendo has now lauded the Wii, Wii U and Switch as all being low energy consuming and power efficient. This is a little worrying for the raw tech specs of the Switch 2, especially as a lot of us just want the docked horsepower to be much better.
Loved this game on Wii. The way it used the Wiimote like a torch was brilliant. And I love how all the little things you do (like exploring the women's toilets) determines the story outcomes.
@YoshiF2 Fragile Dreams is great, but be warned, its gameplay kinda sucks; combat is quite dull and there's a lot of backtracking and repetitive fetch quests. However, its tone and sense of loneliness is fantastic.
@Yomerodes "As they clearly show, the only port that actually fails at the frame rate test is the Steam Deck."
No, in the video they state that the Steam Deck mostly runs at a locked 720p 60fps in portable mode (1080p 60fps in docked). The only "drops" are very small loading area ones, that typically happen in a few areas of town. However, when the frame rate is capped to 30 or 40fps, it completely eliminates those stutters. But for the most part the game runs at 60fps, max graphics, just fine. In portable mode, the Deck runs at 720p, vs 540p on Switch.
But most importantly, the Steam Deck version has the higher resolution textures. A lot of small texture details appear to be completely smeared out on Switch, which, in a game that's all about its art style, is a disappointment.
Also, the average person is going to play Persona 5 docked sometimes as well. When you compare the docked performance of Steam Deck vs the Switch, the Deck is simply better in terms of frame rate, resolution and higher quality textures. On a big screen, the Switch's low res textures are also going to be much more noticeable. One thing I agree with the reviewer about, is the "deeper blacks" of the Switch OLED (I have the OG Switch, so that doesn't apply to me).
Performance wise: Battery life on Deck is about 4 hours with a capped 40 hertz/40 fps frame rate. 40hz/40fps is the sweet spot on Steam Deck, as it draws little battery compared to 60hz/60fps, while still maintaining a very smooth motion. Why? Because 30hz = 33.3ms response time, 60hz = 16.7ms and 40hz is mathematically right in between both at 25ms response time. So while 40 isn't 60, it still feels much smoother than 30. And again, at 40hz, you are getting no frame rate stutters on Deck.
Also, keep in mind that the Digital Foundry guy hasn't played the game all the way through, or for very long, on Deck; if you want more realistic opinions, the following YouTube videos are much more informative:
"With minimal tweaking, I was able to play through the first 10 hours of the game, at a solid 40 frames per second, max graphics, with no drops, and consistent frame pacing throughout."
"At 40 frames, the Deck's battery will also last for around 4 hours"
Quote: 'I've played Persona 5 multiple times. I've played it on PS4; P5 Royal on PS4 and PS5, and I've also played the Nintendo Switch version of P5 Royal now, as well. The low res textures downgrades are a real disappointment, not to mention only 540p in portable mode. Since the Switch has 4GB Ram, I would have thought there was no need to lower texture resolution that much.
The reason file sizes for Doom Eternal, Witcher 3, etc, on Switch are smaller than elsewhere is because they use low resolution assets, which allow the games to run better on Switch, and easily fit on a standard 32GB Switch game cart.
"[Nintendo Switch] cards come in a variety of capacities: 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB and 32 GB. 64 GB cards were released in 2020 after having been delayed for two years and are being made using XtraROM technology from Macronix."
64GB carts have only recently been introduced, but it sounds like almost no games use them, and they are expensive. The fact that 32GB carts were considered "expensive" to use 3 years ago is already a bad sign of hoping that developers will ship on 64GB (or more) carts for the Switch 2.
A Switch 2 may be more powerful, but if you want the ports to have the best possible graphics, audio, etc, then the game file sizes will also need to be much larger, like 80 to 150+ GB. The Witcher 3 was heavily downgraded, yet still about 32GB on Switch.
Physical media purists will be screwed, as either these games will ship on very expensive carts, or most of the game will be a digital download.
"But he will block anyone from Nintendo that replies to him in English. Guy is a bit of a manchild."
One of his "rules" is to block anyone on Twitter, that replies to or sends him a message in English, correct?
So by that logic, if someone from Nintendo (or elsewhere) were to congratulate him in English on Twitter, or just be congenial with him for what ever reason - by his own rules - doesn't that mean he will block that person?
So with that said, with the fact he will block someone, simply because they wrote him a nice message but it was in English; I think it's perfectly within my reason to call him a "manchild" for that, because I think it's ridiculous.
You can defend him all you want, and that's your opinion, and you are entitled to it. But you haven't done anything to convince me otherwise.
@Tober No, if you actually look in to it, he blocks people for far more reasons than that. Some have called his Twitter persona a game or an act, like what heels in Wrestling do. But the problem is when he uses that act in the worst possible situations, for example during the Helena Taylor situation, which made him come off like a massive idiot. Many people in the games industry even said, 'now's not the time to be doing your weird Twitter shtick about blocking people' but there he was. Manchild, like I said.
'They can't keep getting away with it!' Ridiculous. The Pokemon Company makes how much money a year? And the Switch is significantly more powerful than an Xbox 360, right? So why do these games not only look like ugly, low budget PS2 games, but also run terribly? You would think the graphics were bad because they aiming for 60fps, but they're not even doing that...
I hate the fact that 10's of millions of people continue to dump money in to this inept and talentless company. It's a shame that there aren't more games like Pokemon currently on the market; if there were, maybe there would be some actual competition and TPC wouldn't be so lazy.
These Switch cloud games suffer horribly from lag, especially when playing with handheld Wi-Fi. The new Plague Tale, for example, has several reports of horrible lag on Switch.
But more importantly, they are all run by different companies, so you never know when the servers for these games are going to be cut. It's not going to be like Stadia, where Google actually refunded its users. When these ones are cut, you are probably going to be screwed out of your purchase. Best to just avoid them.
The lack of online multiplayer is a huge deal breaker. That aspect alone is what keeps me coming back to the game. Graphically, it doesn't look good, either; the very low draw distance is very noticeable and off-putting.
Mark this as one "impossible Switch port" that remains impossible.
@Coalescence @Bucky That version isn't on PC, thus not 'superfluous' to make a PC port.
And because this is a PC port, we may see modders go even further with the mods, graphics, gameplay tweaks, etc, that put it far above any other available versions.
@FourBs I think you are under the assumption this is solely used to play the cart directly, which would be convoluted.
Instead, this is an easy way of legally backing up your actual GB carts to a digital format, to then play on the Steam Deck (or elsewhere).
Why play on the Steam Deck over a GBA? Because Steam Deck is an all-in-one system, that conveniently plays almost everything on the market, from new to retro, the ergonomics are nice and the screen is large. Not rocket science, really...
@Truegamer79 Yes, I prefer that Mario fell in to the mushroom kingdom, and not that Mario fell in to our world, like in the Sonic movie.
That said, they did a great job with Sonic and the idea of him being lonely in our world; it was surprisingly touching.
I think the Mario film will be enjoyable, in the same way I enjoy other Hollywood CG movies, like Wreck it Ralph and the Lego Movie, etc.
But I worry he won't have the same vigour from the games, or the Japanese-quirks that they have added to the character over the years. And if he does say his catchphrases, like 'Let's a go!', etc, they will only be said as a punchline to a joke, or in an ironic way.
But yeah, it's still way too early to cast judgement; my opinion is literally based on a few seconds of him talking. The Bowser and Luigi part of the trailer far exceeded my expectations, and looked amazing.
I fear that the film's comedic timing and humour is going to be just like Wreck it Ralph, the Lego movie and many other big CG Hollywood films. It's going to be very dry and sarcastic about the absurdity of Mario's world, rather than fully embrace it for what it is, like you would see in a Japanese anime.
While the Sonic films aren't amazing, I feel they do a great job of perfectly nailing Sonic's (and Tail's) personality.
Whereas, I fear that Mario is just going to seem like a generic dude, who's in a fish out of water scenario, constantly making sarcastic quips about how weird everything is.
@MarioFan432 Valve has now edited the logo out of the video anyway.
But it was likely only because, A. It was most likely a mistake, and not something Valve were marketing as a feature, and B. because of the online uproar of comments like the ones in this article.
It's perfectly legal to modify a Switch and physically backup your Roms and the needed files, for use in the Yuzu emulator. Thus, Yuzu is perfectly legal when used in this context.
If you notice, when Toad first introduces himself, and Mario falls back, you can tell that Mario is supposed to let out an audible loud scream, but it sounds like the audio has been deliberately muted… I think Pratt did do a scream, and they cut it out for sounding bad / avoiding Internet backlash.
In the video, it looks like he's desperately trying to keep his face positioned toward the camera at its most photogenic angle, and not front on, which is very sad and pathetic.
Anyway, he doesn't play or care about the Switch version of Minecraft, no serious Minecraft player does, so this doesn't need to be on the site.
@Serpenterror @Anti-Matter Of what I played, I think ACNH is the most polished and refined version of Animal Crossing, to date.
My problem is that it still felt very samey… I was hoping for radical change. Item and equipment management is still very clunky and annoying. I wanted a full 3D 3rd person camera. I wanted the world to feel bigger and be seamless, with no loading when entering houses, and for houses to be the same scale as they are inside, etc.
While I know this is a very different game, I wanted something more like a scaled down version of Dragon Quest Builders 2 in terms of features, camera, gameplay, etc, while still having the same traits of Animal Crossing.
I don't understand the love for Animal Crossing New Horizons, either. I got bored of it after a week. Don't get me wrong, I loved it on the GameCube and DS back in the early 2000's, but the Switch game just felt like the same old formula.
Knowing what good games are doesn't mean you have the credentials to be a video game publisher. Plus why would any developer want to associate with a publisher that is calling other Indie games "trash", etc?
@steventonysmith I have moved on! I first played the fan translation of Mother 3 about a decade or so ago on a modded Wii. It's an amazing game. Mother 3 is up there with Suikoden 2 as one of my all time favourite JRPG's.
@Don Nintendo may publish M rated games like Bayonetta 2, etc, but they still self-censor their own 1st party games, more than Sony. Mother 3 contains a lot of stuff (drug references, animal abuse, transgender "insensitivity", etc) that make it too difficult to localise in the west, especially not in 2022.
@Edu23XWiiU Firstly, the Steam Deck has literally only been out for about 6 months... So duh, of course it's not going to suddenly eclipse the lifetime sales of the 100's of millions of gaming PC's out there.
Secondly, Steam Deck has been the no.1 global top seller on Steam for the past 5 months. So yes, it's objectively very popular and selling well.
And a base price of £350 is not what I would call "pretty expensive", considering that's cheaper than a mid range smartphone, which couldn't do anywhere near the same level of emulation that the Steam Deck can.
For £350 (and ~£60 for a 512 GB micro SD), you are getting an amazing value for money on the base Steam Deck. With free online gaming, regular Steam sales and weekly free games on EGS, you are getting a ton of value for money that you can't get from any other console.
"Is cheaper to buy a Wii U, and mod it"
Your argument fails because no one is buying a Steam Deck purely for the sake of Wii U emulation. The Steam Deck can do thousands of things (that a Wii U or Switch can't), emulating Wii U is simply just another one of the cool things it can do.
The point of this article is simply just to show how cool Wii U emulation is on the Steam Deck, and how close it comes to the real thing, because of how the shape and gyro controls of the Steam Deck greatly resemble the Wii U gamepad.
Also, since you keep saying the Steam Deck isn't good for emulation, this is what Retro Game Corps, an emulation YouTuber, who knows a hell of a lot more about emuation than you, has to say about Steam Deck:
"Long story short, [Steam Deck] is easily the best emulation handheld you can get, in terms of price to performance.
The fact that this thing can play just about everything at this $400+ price point is just kind of crazy."
"Across the board, Wii U is one of my favourite systems to emulate on the Steam Deck."
"Across the board, every Wii U game I threw at it was just perfect."
"BotW runs better [on the Steam Deck] than it does natively on the Switch, and definitely better than it does on the Wii U"
"When it comes to power to performance, there's nothing that compares to the Steam Deck when it comes to emulation"

I think physical media will be a problem for the Switch 2.
High capacity Switch carts are expensive; most Switch games are under 40GB. The biggest Switch game I could find was NBA 2K21 at 39.4 GB: https://www.thegamer.com/nintendo-switch-games-biggest-file-size-gb/

Re: Video: Here's What Alan Wake Remastered Looks Like On Switch
Embarassing. It actually looks worse than the Xbox 360 version that came out in 2010.
Re: Resident Evil 2, 3 And 7 Cloud Lock In Nintendo Switch Release Dates
These Switch cloud games suffer horribly from lag, especially when playing with handheld Wi-Fi. The new Plague Tale, for example, has several reports of horrible lag on Switch.
But more importantly, they are all run by different companies, so you never know when the servers for these games are going to be cut. It's not going to be like Stadia, where Google actually refunded its users. When these ones are cut, you are probably going to be screwed out of your purchase. Best to just avoid them.
Re: Video: Digital Foundry's Technical Analysis Of No Man's Sky On Switch
The lack of online multiplayer is a huge deal breaker. That aspect alone is what keeps me coming back to the game. Graphically, it doesn't look good, either; the very low draw distance is very noticeable and off-putting.
Mark this as one "impossible Switch port" that remains impossible.
Re: N64 Classic Perfect Dark Has Been Decompiled, Paving The Way For PC Ports
@Coalescence @Bucky That version isn't on PC, thus not 'superfluous' to make a PC port.
And because this is a PC port, we may see modders go even further with the mods, graphics, gameplay tweaks, etc, that put it far above any other available versions.
Re: Random: Valve's Steam Deck Can Now Run Game Boy Advance Cartridges
@FourBs Apologies, I thought you were legitimately asking why someone would play on a Deck, instead of an old GBA.
Anyway, yes, the Steam Deck is a fantastic device to enjoy retro games, via emulation; price to performance wise, it has no equal.
Re: Random: Valve's Steam Deck Can Now Run Game Boy Advance Cartridges
@FourBs I think you are under the assumption this is solely used to play the cart directly, which would be convoluted.
Instead, this is an easy way of legally backing up your actual GB carts to a digital format, to then play on the Steam Deck (or elsewhere).
Why play on the Steam Deck over a GBA? Because Steam Deck is an all-in-one system, that conveniently plays almost everything on the market, from new to retro, the ergonomics are nice and the screen is large. Not rocket science, really...
Re: Bayonetta's OG Voice Actor Asks Fans To "Boycott" Third Game After PlatinumGames Wage Fallout
Guess that means all the video game journalists and ResetEra posters, who pretend to be activists, will boycott the game? ...Right? 🤔
Re: Random: Hideki Kamiya Echoes Every Nintendo Fan's Wishes For The Switch Successor
@-wc- No. It just needs to be called the "Switch 2".
If you call it the "Super Switch" or anything else, the general public are going to assume it's just a Switch "Pro", and not a true successor.
It's like the Wii U, people thought it was just an accessory, not an actual successor to the Wii.
Re: Voice Of Mario Charles Martinet Thanks Fans For All The "Love And Kindness"
Re: Voice Of Mario Charles Martinet Thanks Fans For All The "Love And Kindness"
Re: Random: Oh No, The Internet Thinks Chris Pratt As Mario Sounds Like Linda From Bob's Burgers
@Anti-Matter "just hush, let other peoples enjoy the movie."
But you don't do that when it comes to voicing your dislike for games.
For example, you literally have said things like, 'I hate M rated shooter games', and things of that nature in the past.
Re: Random: Valve's Latest Steam Deck Trailer Briefly Shows A Switch Emulator
@MarioFan432 Valve has now edited the logo out of the video anyway.
But it was likely only because, A. It was most likely a mistake, and not something Valve were marketing as a feature, and B. because of the online uproar of comments like the ones in this article.
It's perfectly legal to modify a Switch and physically backup your Roms and the needed files, for use in the Yuzu emulator. Thus, Yuzu is perfectly legal when used in this context.
Re: Random: Valve's Latest Steam Deck Trailer Briefly Shows A Switch Emulator
Showing a logo for "Yuzu" emulator doesn't count as copyright infringement.
And Nintendo can't do a damn thing about emulation on YouTube anyway, as Linus Tech Tip's has proven:
Re: Poll: What Do You Think Of Mario's Movie Voice?
If you notice, when Toad first introduces himself, and Mario falls back, you can tell that Mario is supposed to let out an audible loud scream, but it sounds like the audio has been deliberately muted… I think Pratt did do a scream, and they cut it out for sounding bad / avoiding Internet backlash.
Re: Random: After Three Years Of Anonymity, Minecraft YouTuber Reveals His Face
In the video, it looks like he's desperately trying to keep his face positioned toward the camera at its most photogenic angle, and not front on, which is very sad and pathetic.
Anyway, he doesn't play or care about the Switch version of Minecraft, no serious Minecraft player does, so this doesn't need to be on the site.
Re: Fandom Has Acquired GameSpot, Giant Bomb, GameFAQs, And Metacritic In $55m Deal
I followed Giant Bomb since its inception, and it's sad to see it continue to lose its identity, and gradually get worse, year after year.
Re: Review: Hokko Life - An Animal Crossing-Like That Lacks Charm And Originality
Re: Review: Hokko Life - An Animal Crossing-Like That Lacks Charm And Originality
I don't understand the love for Animal Crossing New Horizons, either. I got bored of it after a week. Don't get me wrong, I loved it on the GameCube and DS back in the early 2000's, but the Switch game just felt like the same old formula.
Re: Video Game YouTuber Dunkey Launches His Own Indie Publishing Company
Knowing what good games are doesn't mean you have the credentials to be a video game publisher. Plus why would any developer want to associate with a publisher that is calling other Indie games "trash", etc?
Re: Random: Miyamoto Had Some Sage Advice On Game Industry Success In 1989
@steventonysmith I have moved on! I first played the fan translation of Mother 3 about a decade or so ago on a modded Wii. It's an amazing game. Mother 3 is up there with Suikoden 2 as one of my all time favourite JRPG's.
Re: Random: Miyamoto Had Some Sage Advice On Game Industry Success In 1989
@Don Nintendo may publish M rated games like Bayonetta 2, etc, but they still self-censor their own 1st party games, more than Sony. Mother 3 contains a lot of stuff (drug references, animal abuse, transgender "insensitivity", etc) that make it too difficult to localise in the west, especially not in 2022.
Re: Tekken 8 Director Praises Sakurai, Says He's "Probably The Only One That Could Properly" Make Smash Bros.
I've never played it, but Multiversus is still doing very well.
Re: Random: Nintendo Confirms How To Pronounce Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom
Damnit, I was in team tears (rips). Oh well.
Re: Poll: So, How Are You Pronouncing Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom?
I genuinely thought it was tears, as in 'rips'; that sounds better and makes more sense to me. Tears, as in a Kingdom in shreds and disarray.
Re: Random: Wii U Emulation On Valve's Steam Deck Supports Gyro Controls
Wii U time code
