Thank God for that- finally got my Collector’s Edition via Nintendo UK Store 😮💨
I now need to work out how to cancel my preorder from an eBay scalper. It may be a struggle as it was over 30 days ago!
Image Fight II?! One of the more obscure PC Engine games and hard to find on eBay? Just plugged the dormant Wii U controller back in and took the HD cable out of the Switch. Viva Wii U!
Poor game. The American version even more so without the ‘wackiness.’ It really shows it’s age alongside other TG platformers: The Bonk series, New Adventure Island and Jackie Chan being still respectable.
Left joy-con lag is starting to frustrate: died, as a result, on a few occasions. Great game but hasn’t blown me away (initially) as much as playing the first Mario Galaxy.
Hyper Stone Heist was very good, yes. Growl was a pretty shoddy port of an already mediocre arcade title. DJ Boy is an AWFUL game!
The Punisher was a playable enough port, I thought.
Absolutely gutted. Loved the series on PS2 and bought the 2nd game in the series, on Wii, to support more adult orientated games like this making their way to Nintendo platforms. The series has a cult following that have been excluded two games now... It's like the '90's Nintendo all over again. I'll just play cruddy Resident Evil games then...
They should have released the SFC version. I'm playing it now and everything about it, even the option screens, are fine because the game gives you visual representations of what the (few) Japanese words mean. I wouldn't waste my time with this as it's a slow shooter already... A real shame as it's a pretty good game and highlights Konami at their peak time in gaming history.
This is a shooter: it wouldn't have mattered if the Jap version was realised... Would it have been that hard to tac the PAL instructions onto it?
Got this on Flea-bay for £12.00 brand new for the TurboGrafx-16 four years ago, so there's no way I'll be purchasing an inferior NES version! The TurboGrafx-16 version is pretty much arcade perfect I hasten to add and truly brings back nostalgic arcade memories.
Just bought this on 3DS Virtual Console! Can't wait to play it at full 60hz speed for the first time. A great Castlevania, but not the best. My top three: 1) Symphony of the Night 2) Castlevania IV 3) Dracula X: Rondo of Blood
Total garbage for another week. The heady days, of retro games galore on the Wii, are a long time gone and a quickly fading memory of when we has it good. Only Earthbound has made me sit up over the past 12 months...
@boywundr I'm off to Tokyo in the summer, for my honeymoon mate. Can't wait! I'm looking even more forward after reading your message: it's the main reason I want to go there!
Coming from England, I really didn't see a choice but to import games back in 1991, when I was 13 years old and desperate to play games, that were as close as possible to the arcade quality and for those ultra quality games (especially on the SNES and PC Engine) that I just couldn't wait for a PAL release.
I also wanted to own them before my peers, as did they! Playground boasting was an essential part of gaming then! I still remember playing games like Splatterhouse, Lords of Thunder, Bonk's Adventure (PC Engine) and being blown away! Final Fantasy and Secret of Mana on the SNES were truly revolutionary back in their early '90's. I used to get a lot of my games from the USA back then and only a few from Japan.
Without 'grey import' shops, I'd have missed out back in the day. I felt like they were providing an essential service!
I never import modern games though, it's not quite as relevant-for a plethora of reasons- in this day and age.
PC Engine version is fantastic. The extra level is great. The chip music of the PC Engine release is excellent as well. The graphics are indeed arcade perfect, although the game slows down a lot in places.
I'm getting sick to death of these inferior and constant NES releases on both the 3DS & Wii U. Nintendo need to get releasing some interesting games from other systems that they haven't released before on the Wii.
All these re-releases are fantastic little games, genuinely top arcade conversions. I always preferred PC Engine games over MegaDrive/Genesis back in the day and still nowadays. I honestly think the system was better in most way, but most importantly for the superior software, especially the Super CD-ROM games!
@AtelierFan Yeah I think The PC Engine game card was 20Mb, dwarfing any other cart size, while the US version (released about 4 years earlier was 4Mb)
I presume the PC Engine/TurboGrafx version of StreetFighter II' was a little more pricey in the US was because it's an import title: it was never released in America, hence the higher points cost.
I think it's a great version of the game: it seemed slightly more bloody/violent than the SNES releases too, more in line with the arcade game in that sense!
@AtelierFan That's interesting... Maybe something to do with the original Jap PC Engine release of R-Type being split over two separate Hu-Cards to purchase (4 levels on each) You got a code (I'm led to believe) when you completed the 1st to enter on the 2nd part of the game you purchased. The US TurboGrafx release was on a larger Hu-Card (Turbo-Chip) containing the whole game though a couple of years later. This could have something to do with the logic behind that one- just a guess though!
Don't think I'll bother with this since I only found the original on the 3DS 'alright.' The series has somewhat slowly lost its way since the days of RE4 in my opinion. I'm desperate for some quality titles coming to the Wii U: this isn't it. I think it has the potential to be a much better system than the Wii... Pikmin 3 can't come soon enough.
Excellent news. I bought Kirby's Adventure for 30p, so will purchasing Kirby Superstar if I can get it for the discounted price. Will see what it tries to charge my credit card first: the full or discounted price.
@Reddaye They were released on the Sega Saturn on one disc, although loading times were frustrating and it only released in Japan. They were still very playable, apart from a little Japanese text on in game menus. A pretty pricey game to import nowadays.
@Peach64 Spot on. They have failed to move with the times and are sadly a rip off on all of the product lines they sell nowadays. You are, indeed, sane.
This is one of the few 3DS titles I'm going to pre-order (along with Luigi's Mansion that I'm still waiting for). I can't wait. Great news that the combat will have an old school vibe.
Simple: don't buy it. I'm sick of being treated like this, especially in the year 2013. I will make my feelings known by not purchasing this or any other game that's running at 50hz: GAMES WEREN'T INVENTED TO BE RUN AT THIS SPEED. Europeans shouldn't have to put up with this rubbish any longer... 17% slower! I'd rather spend the extra cash and buy an old US/JAP NES/Famicom... Don't care if it's only 30p.
Lovely game that looks alot like Syphony of the Night. Along with the just mentioned and Castlevania IV, this is one of the best Catlevania's ever made. Love the little secrets and multiple route through the game: they all add depth and replay value, as does the choice of two characters. This is easily the most polished and best PC Engine title (TurboGrafx), and the system has an abundance of GRADE-A titles!
Just bought this and completed on easy. Really enjoyed it, so going to tackle normal mopde now! Best shooter I've played on the Genesis/Megadive. It's VERY similar to Spriggan on the Pc Engine/TurboGrafx,another amazing shooter from Compile, but without the cinemas and CD soundtrack. Shooter fans should buy immediately, up there with the mighty Soldier Blade... Shame the game is 50hz in Europe though, hence gameplay is slower and the screen is 'letterboxed'. Why have Nintendo/Sega done this??? Cho Aniki and Mario RPG (both of course un-released in Europe) and many other titles aren't so why make a great game less great? Annoys me, it's like the 16bit era all over again...
If you like shooters this is well worth getting. It is easier than the too tough Super Star Soldier and has better visuals. Not as good as Soldier Blade, yes, but few shooters reach that calibre.
If anyone likes this get Blazing Lazers, the first in the Turbo Grafx's famed 'Soldier' series. It's not quite as good as this gem (in my humble opinion), but it's a pretty close thing. THE TURBO GRAFX WAS THE KING OF SHOOTERS!!! Lets hope a few more of those Jap only PC Engine classics make it to the West.
I get confused with all the Wonderboy titles...There's some out on the Master System, Mega Drive and the Turbo Duo...Then some are remakes of earlier ones (in the case of the Turbo Grafx/Duo). Bloody confusing. Want to buy this or Dragon's Curse. Which one's best??

Re: Gradius
Great news! A great conversion of a classic shooter, with a new level over the arcade. A bit of slow down makes it a little easier that the arcade.
A shame it was never released on the TurboGrafx and remained a Japanese exclusive on the system.
