@Lightsiyd Imagine a handheld with Nintendo Switch Online except you can have every game for every retro system from Atari 2600 up through GameCube and every system in-between and it doesn't cost you anything beyond the price of buying the device. That's an emulation handheld.
I love arcade sticks and own half a dozen of them, so normally a product like this would really appeal to me, but that button layout is a totally nonsensical fustercluck o_O
I got my Switch in February of this year and since then I've had to send my Joy-Cons back to Nintendo to be repaired for drifting 3 times. The Switch is basically the modern Atari 5200. Neat system with great games, but the analog sticks aren't worth a darn in the reliability department.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. I'm pretty late getting to this game, but I finally picked it up when it was 50% off on Black Friday and have been playing it every day since. Wondrous game! ^_^
I loved Super Lucky's Tale on the Xbox One, I love New Super Lucky's Tale on the Switch even more, and I would love (love, love, love) for there to be a sequel! ^_^
I'll snag if a physical copy is released or if it goes on sale for $20 or less digitally at some point, but as it stands the price point is a bit too high for a digital game if you ask me.
I'll get one eventually, I'm just waiting for some different color options to come along. I've always gone with either red, purple, or retro themed designs for my handhelds so I'm waiting for a Switch Lite in one of those colors/styles. Until then I'm pretty content with my regular Switch and Mario Odyssey Red JoyCons. =)
I just wrapped up Doom 3 along with the Resurrection of Evil and Lost Mission add-ons last night, so I'm not too sure what to play now. I picked up Atari Flashback Classics and a Flip Grip last week but haven't felt too inspired to play it much yet. I've been thinking about snagging the HD remaster of Resident Evil while it's on sale for $20, but I kinda feel like if I wait longer it might drop down to $10 or $15 since Capcom hasn't been having the best luck on the Switch eShop.
I was going to say, "They should probably just keep them." but then I realized that EA published the Dead Space series, and I never got around to playing Dead Space 2 back when I had an Xbox 360. I could go for a Dead Space Trilogy on the Switch. =)
I'm still playing the same game I was last weekend, Doom 3, but now I've finished the main game and am working my way through the Resurrection of Evil expansion. I've also got a copy of Atari Flashback Classics coming in the mail today so I know there's some Asteroids and Millipede in my near future. =)
Very cool of Nintendo to do this! Unfortunately for me I got my Switch back in February so no upgrade in my future, though I sure can't complain about the 6 months of fantastic gaming I've gotten out of my Switch so far. =)
I already purchased Doom 3 a couple weeks ago, but I vowed that I would wait until the Bethesda.net login requirement was patched out to buy Doom & Doom II. Now that the patch is here I've gone ahead and bought both =)
@KryptoniteKrunch Agreed! I wouldn't mind seeing a compilation of their Atari 2600 games on the Switch too. Activision was definitely the #1 third party developer during the Atari days, back when they were actually a really awesome company.
@GravyThief Same here! I use rechargable AA batteries in my backlit GBA and they work great, I just buy a new pack every 3 or 4 years when they eventually wear out. Having a handheld that runs on AAs is excellent future proofing, since rechargable AAs are available pretty much anywhere and I can't sele them dissapearing from store shelves in my lifetime. =)
As a vegetarian and a fan of previous Cooking Mama games I definitely appreciate the new mode, and holy guacamole the digital version will be resellable!? I'm a physical media collector all the way, but I can see a lot of people appreciating the blockchain based DRM allowing them to resell a digital game if they ever tire of it.
I'm definitely interested if it takes AA batteries. Rechargable battery packs are great in the short run, but trying to find replacements for them that actually work and hold a charge 20 years down the line is a real headache. Don't get me wrong, I love my Switch, but it's going to be a serious annoyance when it becomes a retro system in a couple decades.
On the flip side, my AGS-101 backlit original Game Boy Advance is great but custom projects like that always have little imperfections that annoy me, and I know Analogue makes all their products to a quality standard that is sure to satisfy even the most OCD retro gamer; so I'd certainly be down for a new GBA or other multi-system portable from them. =)
I just wish fighting game developers would stop trying to re-balance them period. Release the game the way they want it, with all the characters included (none of this "buy the game with most of the characters on the cart and then buy the rest as DLC later" nonsense), and leave it that way. No DLC, no patches, and no forced online connectivity. I want the whole finished game on the cart or I'm not buying it, which I suppose is why I haven't bought any fighting games at all for the last two console generations.
Weird that the reviewer took issue with the voice acting quality, I always thought it was excellent. Maybe my standards just aren't that high lol I've been playing Doom 3 for the last 4 days (both docked and handheld) and haven't noticed any frame rate issues either on the default graphics settings and playing on Veteran difficulty.
@Giygas_95 Same here! I've beaten DOOM (2016) on Ultra Violence three times so I decided to play Doom 3 on Veteran difficulty and it's been putting up a good fight. Thankfully being able to save your game any time keeps it from getting frustrating, though I just encountered the first Revenants this morning and am getting my butt pretty well kicked at the moment lol
Doom 3 gets my pick for the best eShop game of the past month. It doesn't suffer from the DRM or technical issues of Doom & Doom II, and it's just a really fun, scary, and well designed game that still holds up incredibly well 15 years after it's initial release. It's quite a long game for one of this genre too and a good value for the $10 USD it'll set you back. =)
Two games for me this weekend, Doom 3 and the new physical release of Horizon Chase Turbo. Doom 3 is just as fun and scary as I remember it being when I last played it on the Xbox 360 a decade ago, and Horizon Chase Turbo is absolutely everything I could want in a racing game. It feels just like I walked up to a racing arcade machine back in the 90's and plunked in a couple quarters every time I sit down to play it. =)
@Mgene15 Yep, and I actually bought an Xbox One just to play the original Super Lucky's Tale when it first came out. I think it's a heart-meltingly adorable game that just exudes charm and personality, and it's got everything I look for in a good 3D platformer. Smooth and fluid controls, clever and varied level design with lots of areas to explore and secrets to discover, a good story with plenty of humor, and a really likeable protagonist who's just fun to watch and interact with.
I respect that everyone has their own unique preferences in games, but for my tastes Super Lucky's Tale ticks all the boxes and I can't wait to see what surprises the new Switch version has in store. =)
Great review! I picked up the physical limited edition on launch day last week and, as a big fan of Raiden Trad on the Sega Genesis, Raiden V was just what I was looking for. A decidedly old school shoot 'em up that's still Raiden through and through, but with a lot of nice modern touches to make it more accessible. I'd definitely recommend Raiden V: Director's Cut to any fan of the classic Raiden games or just vertical scrolling shooters in general. =)
The original Super Lucky's Tale on the Xbox One is my all time favorite 3D platformer, so I am EXTREMELY flubbin' excited for the new and improved Switch version! About as excited as excited gets! Excitement levels have reached maximum excitement threshold! I'll be waiting outside Best Buy to scurry in and pick up my pre-order for New Super Lucky's Tale the very second the store opens on November 8th! =D
@PhilKenSebben Yeah, but the current version of Doom 3 is still going to bug me for a Bethesda.net sign in every time I go to play it so I'd rather wait to buy the fixed version that isn't going to bug me. It's more about the principle of the thing, not wanting to give Bethesda money until they fix their mistakes.
I've been up all night playing Raiden V: Director's Cut Special Edition and having a total blast with it, and if Bethesda gets a clue at some point and patches out the ridiculous DRM in the Doom trilogy then I'll definitely pick them up and give Doom 3 a play through.
I absolutely adore the classic Doom games and have bought Doom & Doom II on every system I've ever owned that they were published on, and I was so very excited to finally play Doom 3 again for the first time in a decade or so. But there is absolutely zero excuse to force the user to sign into an online account to play a single player game with no online features at all.
If Bethesda updates these games to remove the forced online connectivity then I'll buy all 3, but until then I'm going to pass.
I was all set to buy all three games when I got home tonight, but after finding out about the forced login to Bethesda.net requirements I'm gonna pass until Bethesda removes that crud. There's no reason you should have to sign in to any online account to play these games.
Oh fudge yes! I'll be buying all three today, and I'd definitely double dip for a physical copy down the road. I love all of them but I'm especially excited to play Doom 3 again! =D
Thank you for sharing this video NintendoLife! I do repair work on quite a few different consoles from the Atari 2600 to the Wii, so it was really nice to finally learn what is actually causing the joy-con drift issue. I would have never imagined Nintendo's R&D could have thought it was a good idea to have metal leaf springs rubbing on graphite pads, since graphite is so easily worn down, but on the upside that means that it should be a pretty easy fix on Nintendo's end for future joy-con revisions. Just replace the graphite pads with a more solid and durable conductive metal like copper or aluminum and the drift issues should (pardon my pun) drift away. =)
I'm just curious if this DLC is going to be on the physical cart that releases a week from today. I always go for physical media whenever possible so I'm planning on picking up Horizon Chase Turbo next week, but it annoys the heck out of me when a company finally releases a game physically then leaves out some of the DLC.
I've been fortunate enough to not have either of my Joy-Cons drift, but I've only owned my Switch for 5 months now and I know it's probably just a matter of time before they do. I'm glad this problem is going to court so Nintendo will have no other choice but to address it and fix the issue, because they sure don't seem to be willing to do so without someone forcing their hand on the matter.
Some of y'all 60 FPS folks are really picky. I've owned DOOM on the Xbox One and the Switch, and I honestly can't really tell the difference between how they look and control. They look pretty identical to me when docked and the handheld mode on the Switch just looks a little softer in the graphical department. It's not a big difference, to me at least.
And the DOOM: Eternal creative director Hugo Martin isn't wrong. I've played through DOOM's single player campaign 4 times on the Switch and 3 times on the Xbox One, but I've probably only spent 2 hours total on the online multiplayer mode. The single player campaign is really where it's at for that game. =)
This weekend I'm playing Darkwood on the Switch. I've been a huge survival horror fan since the mid 90's and have played every horror game I could get my hands on since then, and I can safely say that Darkwood is one of the very best. =)
I'm not too concerned. I've already got a Hori D-pad left joycon for portable play and a 8-BitDo SN30 Pro controller for docked play, and the D-pads on both are great so my D-pad troubles were already sorted a while ago. =)
@Edu23XWiiU You're very welcome! There's not a whole lot of info out there on this game and it's a pretty good one as far as licensed games go, so I figured I'd toss in my two cents on it. I think your kids will have a lot of fun with it. =)
@Reignmaker Everyone's got different tastes in games, and I just bought the kind of games that I know I enjoy playing. I think my game selections might largely be a product of my age though. I'm in my 30's now and don't seem to have the kind of patience for games that I did when I was younger, so I tend not to go for any game that's going to take more than 20 hours to beat. No matter how good a game is I just kinda lose interest after 20 hours or so and move on to something else, which is why I've passed over Nintendo's first party offerings like Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey, and Smash thus far. They're just too long for my liking, which is probably a complaint that isn't often heard. lol
On the flip side, I have gone back and replayed DOOM four times over and beaten it with 100% completion on Ultra Violence twice now so there are still games that can really sink their hooks into me every now and then. =)
@Edu23XWiiU The Paw Patrol game looks and sounds almost identical to the TV show, just a touch lower resolution. As far as gameplay goes it's a pretty simple by-the-numbers sort of collectathon 2.5D platformer with some mini games thrown in to break up the platforming in every level, and each of the 16 levels is a rescue mission structured like an episode of the cartoon. The whole cast of Paw Patrol pups are playable and you control two different pups in every level, so every character gets at least a couple levels. The only complaint I could really make about the game is the constant reminders it gives the player about how the controls work, which I suppose could be helpful for the preschooler demographic it's geared towards, but it would have been nice if they had included an option to turn off the control reminders in the menu.
That's a fairly minor complaint though and I'd say that as far as licensed games go this is a pretty good one. It doesn't do anything especially innovative, but it doesn't do anything really wrong either. It looks and sounds good, the control is tight, the gameplay is fun and engaging if not a bit simplistic, and there's a bunch of awards and extras to unlock by accomplishing various goals in each level so it's got some replay value as well. I don't think Paw Patrol: On a Roll! will be winning any game of the year awards, but it's still sure to please fans of the show. =)
@BacklogBlues Thanks but no thanks! lol I just got Fox n Forests used about a week ago and it set me back just over $100. Pricey game, but it is a heck of a lot of fun. =)
It's legit, the first games I bought for my Switch were DOOM followed by Sonic Mania Plus. Weirdly I now own 8 physical games for my Switch and 5 digital ones and not a single game is a 1st party Nintendo title. o_O
For physical games I've got:
And digitally I have Darkwood, Dust: An Elysian Tail, Fe, Night in the Woods, and Resident Evil: Revelations 2.
@Dm9982 I actually just sat down and tried out Paw Patrol for about an hour, playing through the first 3 missions, and while you can definitely tell it was a game designed with preschoolers in mind due to the constant tutorial reminders (do they really need to tell you that you can pull a rope with the B button every single time you encounter a rope?) the controls feel tight and precise and the 2.5D platforming feels good. Initially I thought it was going to be a 3D platformer but it ended up being 2.5D, which is just fine by me though. As an adult gamer I didn't manage to find all the collectibles in the first few levels on my first try, and there are rewards to unlock for finding them all so that's a good sign for replayability.
So far my initial impression of Paw Patrol: On A Roll is that it looks and sounds pretty identical to the TV show, and the gameplay is solid if not very simple. Given the target age range for this game though the simplicity is totally understandable, and the only real complaint I could make about it is that there's no way to turn off the constant and repetitive tutorials in the options menu. I imagine the frequent reminders of how the controls work would be really helpful for a 3 year old though, so I'd say go ahead and pick it up for your daughter. For me it's proving to be a much needed break from the constant stomach churning stress of Outlast lol
@Dm9982
I haven't played it yet but the critic reviews made it sound pretty good. I've read that it's fairly by the numbers collectathon sort of 3D platformer that doesn't do anything wrong but doesn't bring anything new to the table that you haven't seen before either (aside from being able to play as the full cast of Paw Patrol pups across the various levels), so it should be a good game for kids and fans of the show but don't expect Mario Odyssey levels of innovation. Oddly enough Paw Patrol: On A Roll was published by Torus Games, who also handled the excellent port of Doom II to the Game Boy Advance and Duke Nukem Advance back in the day. =)

This weekend I'm playing Darkwood on the Switch. I've been a huge survival horror fan since the mid 90's and have played every horror game I could get my hands on since then, and I can safely say that Darkwood is one of the very best. =)
Re: Nintendo Has "No Plans" To Add Switch Lite's D-Pad To Future Joy-Con
I'm not too concerned. I've already got a Hori D-pad left joycon for portable play and a 8-BitDo SN30 Pro controller for docked play, and the D-pads on both are great so my D-pad troubles were already sorted a while ago. =)
Re: Guide: Nintendo Switch vs Nintendo Switch Lite: What Are The Differences?
The only thing I'm still wondering about is does no IR Motion Camera = no gyro aiming in games like DOOM and Splatoon 2?
Re: Bethesda's Pete Hines Says "It's Clear" The Studio Is Bringing New Players To Switch
@TheAwesomeBowser Scroll up to post #60 for my reason why I've past over Nintendo's first party offerings thus far. =)
Re: Bethesda's Pete Hines Says "It's Clear" The Studio Is Bringing New Players To Switch
@Edu23XWiiU You're very welcome! There's not a whole lot of info out there on this game and it's a pretty good one as far as licensed games go, so I figured I'd toss in my two cents on it. I think your kids will have a lot of fun with it. =)
Re: Bethesda's Pete Hines Says "It's Clear" The Studio Is Bringing New Players To Switch
Re: Bethesda's Pete Hines Says "It's Clear" The Studio Is Bringing New Players To Switch

@BacklogBlues
Thanks but no thanks! lol I just got Fox n Forests used about a week ago and it set me back just over $100. Pricey game, but it is a heck of a lot of fun. =)
Re: Bethesda's Pete Hines Says "It's Clear" The Studio Is Bringing New Players To Switch

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (July 6th)
@Dm9982
I actually just sat down and tried out Paw Patrol for about an hour, playing through the first 3 missions, and while you can definitely tell it was a game designed with preschoolers in mind due to the constant tutorial reminders (do they really need to tell you that you can pull a rope with the B button every single time you encounter a rope?) the controls feel tight and precise and the 2.5D platforming feels good.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (July 6th)
@Dm9982
