@gcunit Spending outrageous amounts of money on otaku pleasures is a bigger thing in Japan than the west, so they get more to spend it on. Westerners wouldn't buy all the stuff they complain about not getting; instead they'd complain about companies trying to exploit them.
@nessisonett Clearly you don't read any of the comments from other people on all of these articles you comment on, because the masses who criticize Nintendo at every opportunity are most definitely not imaginary. But the fact that you found a way to play to them means that you already know that.
@Zenszulu Responding to snark based on ignorance, which is the worst kind, is not "taking things personally". If you expect me to let such comments be, perhaps you can explain why you saw fit not to. Are you not taking it personally, using your apparent criterion?
This outlet so completely misunderstood what Summer in Mara was attempting, and this reviewer makes such a point of drawing attention to her writing, that I can't recommend anybody take this review as either legitimate criticism or a basis for a purchase decision. As something to click on to drive advertising revenue, I'm sure it serves its purpose well.
@sikthvash Spoken like someone who has never attempted game development of any kind. If it's so easy, put one together yourself. I've got RPG Maker for Switch; I'll play your game and let you know what I think.
@HIGHscores85 You seriously don't understand why a game named after a 35 year old Japanese console might not have enough appeal in the general market for a physical edition?
@__Link__ I can actually recommend all of them, to a very specific audience. They are the JRPG equivalent of the genre fiction section of your bookstore. They are quick, low-cost games that don't require much effort from players and provide them with exactly what they expect. No, they are not great, but they're not bad, either, and honestly, they're not trying to be great, so it's unfair to hold that against them. If you're in the mood for something like the original Final Fantasy but want something different because you've already played it a dozen times, these are the games for you. If that's not what you're looking for, look elsewhere.
Loved the first, never got around to the second, but it's there in my backlog, along with about two dozen other 100 hour RPGs. Would buy a new entry or remakes for the Switch equally instantaneously.
@Ocaz Well, video game development is never minimal work, and no corporation hates money, meaning anybody who suggests that with even the merest whiff of seriousness loses all credibility entirely. But apart from that, interesting post.
They need seven DLC packs, each one containing all of the tracks from one of the earlier entries. I would pay more than the price of a new entry for them.
@abdias They had enough knowledge that, had the power been there, they could have done anything that developers today can. They could probably have done more, in fact, because the more that power is available, the less developers learn about how to use it. Limitations are instructive.
@rjejr I thought the same thing, and preventing the lie that has just been propagated is the single most compelling argument for the Oxford comma that I've ever seen.
@Scollurio Limitations are good for the imagination. Whenever the subject comes up, I'm always reminded of Robert Frost: "Writing free verse is like playing tennis with the net down."
@Scollurio Actually they got delayed; I want to say until October, but don't quote me on that. So it will still be a while, but fortunately my Switch backlog is big enough to last until then.
Summer in Mara, which reviewed as not as good as Stardew Valley, even though to think that it was trying to be Stardew Valley is to completely miss what it was trying to do: 3/10.
Players who want intelligent analysis to help them decide how to spend their money: going elsewhere.
@ICISAZEL I suspect that the licensing would be such a nightmare that it's essentially impossible. (If I understand correctly Japanese rights holders let licenses expire and never renew them more frequently than western companies, so the fact that it has happened before doesn't actually make it more likely to happen again.)
You can tell how little NL writers know about fragrance. The PR is admittedly over the top, which is par for the course for the industry, but it's quite descriptive, and the notes listed are common, meaning anybody familiar with fragrances will start with a point of comparison. Anybody familiar with fragrances will also know that the entire purpose of the three notes listed is to give people familiar with Cool Water--there are many, as it's one of the most popular fragrances ever--an idea of how this flanker differs. Of course, they probably already know if they really cared, because this is just Cool Water Aquaman rebranded to see if targeting a different market will help it to sell. Also, don't call this expensive. Cool Water and its flankers are among the cheapest fragrances you can find. At a discounter Cool Water is about $20. Green Irish Tweed, the niche fragrance it is most commonly compared to, is $300. It retails for $400. This article might be attempting light sarcasm, but it fails to land because there is no knowledge behind it. It's as if a Fragrantica writer thought that "finish him" made for a bit of clever copy.
The NES Classic was clearly intended as a stopgap, both for content for consumers and revenue for the company, after the Wii U was dead and before the Switch was ready. Now that they are experiencing success again it doesn't advance their goals, so they no longer offer it.
Worth keeping hooked up, primarily to make Wii games look a bit better, but I can't see buying one if you don't already own one. Too little is available only there to justify spending money. Now if you found one for twenty bucks at an estate sale...
We're about 40 comments in, and so far @Blizzia is the only one to have even mentioned light novels, which is the source of this title trend, and among which this one fits right in. Everyone else loses their Japanese pop culture privileges.
@Pokester99 The best summary of Nintendo compared to the competition that I've seen is that Nintendo makes games for adults which look like they're for kids, while other companies make games for kids which look like they're for adults.
I suspect that I'm about to get a laundry list of exceptions from people who don't realize that they are confirming the point.
@brunojenso But that's exactly my point. If the main gameplay hook is the interplay between 2D and 3D, it wasn't unique when this game was released, but had already been done five years earlier in a game featuring gaming's biggest character. Fish may have done very good things with the idea, but devising it in the first place wasn't one of them.
I'm sure the game is brilliant, but I don't get the adulation. Not only is Phil Fish Phil Fish, but the review makes it sound like Super Paper Mario, instead of having the startlingly original gameplay I've been led to believe it has. Am I missing something?
Might get Longing, if only to make sure that if I do I won't be far behind everybody else (brilliant marketing, that). I have Deiland from the Kickstarter. I fully expect to be enjoying it when NL publishes their 4/10 review because it isn't Stardew Valley.
@sethharris1191 What an original hot take. Pray tell, when you get a moment, please describe those clothes your emporer is wearing, that I might know them better.
@KateGray Yes, some of it is circumstance; why did you not factor that into the original article? No technology, the Switch included, is designed for the level of use that somebody using it professionally puts it through. Have you ever played a game forty hours straight to get a review ready before the embargo lifts? It's not meant to be used like that, most people aren't using it that way, and it would have needlessly increased the cost of the machine had Nintendo built it based on that expected use. Not to mention that you can write off a new one as a business expense, or claim the depreciation on your taxes. Things fall apart, as it has been written; it's not always problematic.
