Re: Rumour: Dataminers Have Uncovered The Details Of The Story DLC For Xenoblade Chronicles 2

EvilLucario

@ouroborous The items you get from the Season Pass are VERY helpful for any part of the game.

As for Blade Combos, you start by using a Special, then you choose the next step with a higher leveled Special in the available elements. For example, say you started with a Fire Special. Now, you can choose to do either a level 2+ Fire or Water Special. Then they diverge again. If you picked Fire, you can do either a level 3-4 Fire or Light Special to finish the combo for MASSIVE damage. If you picked Water, you can do either a level 3-4 Fire or Ice Special to finish the combo.

If you started with an Earth element, you can pick Fire or Earth. From Fire, you can pick Earth or Wind. From Earth, you can pick Electric.

Etc.

You're in Chapter 3 so you'll get Chain Attacks soon, but combat can be described like this:

Autoattacks fuel Arts, which fuel Specials, which fuel Blade Combos, which fuels the Chain Attack, which fuels the Full Burst.

Make sure you learn and practice Blade Combos, because they are the most important thing to learn in this game. I've seen some people fall into the trap of not really wrapping their head around the mechanics then call the combat "slow and tedious" because they don't know how to pull off Blade Combos.

Re: Rumour: Dataminers Have Uncovered The Details Of The Story DLC For Xenoblade Chronicles 2

EvilLucario

@R_Champ I've been playing through the game multiple times to really analyze everything (including the gameplay) and I haven't found very much plot holes in the story. Nearly everything is explained/inferred in some fashion, and there's very little contraditions with each other. May I ask what those were?

If you want to talk about contrived plot devices though, you might have a point since there are some iffy ones that needed to be forced out of the story. Looking at you, Obrona and Haze. Some other story stuff is also pretty sloppily told. But contrived plot devices =/= plot hole. Contrived plot devices are more like something like Obrona's cutting off the ether flow that is super overpowered (which is why they kill her off very early), though one could argue that isn't so contrived and more "just really powerful", considering the stuff Blades can do. Plot holes are more "this event happened but contradicts past established information", and there's really very little to none of that in the game.

Personally though, at the end of the day, as long as the plot hole isn't super out-there I can live with it. There's plot holes and some form of bad writing in quite a few other popular stuff and while it's annoying, I can overlook it if it's not super distractingly bad or detrimental to the story.

Re: Rumour: Dataminers Have Uncovered The Details Of The Story DLC For Xenoblade Chronicles 2

EvilLucario

Yeah, and this is pretty damn exciting. Though also this is late, it's a few days old by this point.

In addition to the story DLC datamines, there have also been datamines regarding even stronger superbosses. There's a boss with apparently 37m HP at level 150 within the Challenge Mode. Wew. For comparison, the current strongest superboss, Tyrannotitan Kurodil, is level 130 with around ~15m HP. And the final boss has 3m HP for another comparison.

Yeah, the DLC is looking more and more promising as we're learning more about it.

Re: Nintendo Has Created An Official Charging Stand For The Switch

EvilLucario

I'm annoyed that they're making a peripheral for this and couldn't have made tabletop mode a bit better in the first place, but whatever. Neat little thing. I might pick it up, but unlikely because I BARELY use tabletop mode. Probably like 1%-2% of the time out of my total game time. I'd rather have the Switch in my hands when on the go and for portable multiplayer, there's not much instances where I'd be away from a dock in the first place. The stand allowing for more comfortable angles won't really have an impact on my playstyles.

Re: Kimishima Says Nintendo Has Plans For The 3DS In 2019 And Beyond

EvilLucario

@Octane I get that, and for the record I don't mind about the 3DS latching on. But I think that when you move onto a new generation, you have to move on. I just hope that Nintendo sticks to the Switch going forward and not make a 3DS successor, because supporting two systems in this day and age is far too difficult.

Re: While Other Toys-To-Life Products Struggle, Sales Of amiibo Continue To Grow

EvilLucario

They should keep them in stock too. Taking advantage of the (relatively limited) advantage of merchandising to increase brand value to get them in more people's hands would be even better.

Of course, they can't pull what they did with Metroid: Samus Returns with Fusion Mode locked behind an amiibo. Fortunately, I think they learned from that in recent releases.

Re: Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Version 1.4.0 Launches Later This Week

EvilLucario

This is absolutely hype.

Some things that are not mentioned in this article is that more is to come beyond this update, including the challenge battles promised from the initial DLC, an "Extreme" difficulty, and even more Rare Blades. Incredibly hype, and I'll say this as much times as possible: get this game if you even have an inkling of interest in it. It's such a treat to play and enjoy despite its noticeable flaws.

Re: Official Nintendo Magazine Confirms Pokémon On Switch Will Be 'Generation Eight'

EvilLucario

@Yorumi My standards for endgame are pretty low, all things considered. Battle ____ and online is pretty much the most I need, and I also enjoy breeding powerful Pokemon. Plus, replaying the games with a vastly different setup is always fun, no matter the generation and how brainless combat can be exploited.

That said, in addition to the interesting styles of play like Triple/Rotation Battles and arenas that build off of them, I think there could be more optional dungeons. BIG dungeons too. Level gimmicks, more interesting puzzles, the works. And Legendaries that are NOT spoiled by marketing residing inside them would be cool.

Tbh, when looking at "postgame" I think that's a narrow way of thinking about it. I'd just want more content, period. Pokeathlon from HGSS and that movie thing from BW2 was fun, to name off some examples. Add more silly stuff like that, which can be enjoyed with.

That again ties together with the adventure part I want to see come back. It's not just about exploring the world, but about all the stuff to do within the towns and cities. Less seeing, more doing I say.

Re: Official Nintendo Magazine Confirms Pokémon On Switch Will Be 'Generation Eight'

EvilLucario

@Yorumi It can work and pulled off correctly can eclipse anything else, but I don't trust Game Freak with open world. So instead, the compromise is the best thing we can hope for, if at all.

That said I don't really mind hallway simulators as long as they're interesting enough. Gen 5 is the best example, and while it wasn't mindblowing it was a solid first attempt at a better story, which I greatly enjoyed. 6 was really meh. 7 had some good ideas and was way better than 6, but there were a lot of missed opportunities.

But I don't think the hate for Gen 6/7 would be as big if they allowed you to skip cutscenes. Or maybe the hate would have focused to the lack of a postgame or something. Who knows.

Re: Official Nintendo Magazine Confirms Pokémon On Switch Will Be 'Generation Eight'

EvilLucario

I mean, duh? Every new generation has new stuff, new mechanics.

People also overblow the change BotW gave. Yeah, it was big, but it's not "unlike any Zelda game". No one remembers the original Zelda which was pretty open world for its time? BotW is literally a translation of Zelda 1 to 3D, modernized with today's gaming designs. Linearity only began with Zelda 2.

And BotW combat is still the same Zelda combat we know from the past 3D Zelda games. All the core parts of Zelda is still there.

Back on topic, keep the battle system. People go on and on about how the turn-based system should change (mostly by non-fans who haven't played since Gen 2), but these people have no clue about the inner workings of the battles. These same people asking for new stuff have already gotten their new stuff to make the battles much better, like physical/special split and abilities. They're asking for the wrong thing for combat - they actually need difficulty options. Pokemon games are brainless in every game, including Gen 1 and 2. Train 2-3 Pokemon, have 4 HM slaves, spam your strongest moves, revive your main Pokemon with your HM slaves as a sacrificial lamb, you win the game. Make better AI, give all the bosses 6 Pokemon, make them switch Pokemon, have good coverage with their movesets, etc. Sure, keep it as is for the younger crowd who don't understand the battle system as well as people like me who's been playing since the beginning, but difficulty options should return in full force in Gen 8.

No, the biggest thing Pokemon needs: expand the world a ton and bring back that sense of adventure. You don't need open world, but a compromise like Xenoblade 1 or 2 (Xenoblade X is open world) where they're linear JRPGs, but has expansive areas with optional areas to explore would be best suited at the moment. They can (and should) still tell a story like they've done from Gen 5 onwards, but the sense of adventure can be revived with a ton of optional areas to explore. Allow us to skip cutscenes, though.

THAT'S what Pokemon should reinvigorate. People love BotW because you're off on your own adventure exploring. Bring that same feeling back into Pokemon. Going open world CAN work, but I like linear yet big areas that then make up one huge world by endgame. It's also less risky, and game design can be more focused on challenges that can better scale.

But this is Game Freak. They'll be content to just make another game like Gen 5-7 and suckers like me would still pick up the game no matter the quality. Meh.

Re: Feature: Here's What Pro Players Want From Super Smash Bros On Switch

EvilLucario

@Paraka It doesn't need to be just like Subspace. They can make something shorter that's more in line with Adventure Mode from Melee. Keep it focused and give the mode reasons to revisit it just for enjoyment. The aim for the story mode should be to make it enjoyable every time you play it.

Take the good aspects of both Adventure Mode and Subspace and mix them together.

Re: Video: Discussing the Possibility of Spyro Reignited Trilogy Coming to Switch

EvilLucario

Who cares about the PS4/Xbox One versions anyway? Barring extreme technical mishaps like Arkham Knight or Nier: Automata, a PC version is always going to trump those versions in every single way possible. Why can't we get more games that simultaneously release on PC too? Not just Switch, but PC too. Monster Hunter World has its PC release at a later date, and Red Dead Redemption 2 is only consoles so far. Why?????

Only Switch versions can compete with PC because of that added draw of portability. Sure, it won't work for everyone but if you want good graphics and performance, why go half-way with console versions? Don't half-heartedly go for the console versions.

Re: Video: We Feel these Top Ten Characters Deserve to Be in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo Switch

EvilLucario

So many Smash lists are garbage nowadays, tbh. Some more than others. Smash already has a ton of characters to pick from and adding any more is more often than not scraping the bottom of the barrel. Mostly in third-party choices though, some people want Soltaire and that dude from Skyrim while others unironically want Goku. And while I don't doubt there will be a new third-party representative, it's such a wild card and tends to favor the old franchises with massive staying power. Even Snake and Cloud, being so out of place in terms of Smash, are the faces of their respective franchises that are very long lasting, and Bayonetta is pretty much a Nintendo character nowadays too. So while I can see the argument for characters like Doomguy who had a game that really defined FPS games while having a great comeback in 2016, I don't see the same deal for other choices like that Skyrim dude.

With that said, there are some decent Nintendo choices to pick from.

Issac from Golden Sun can make the jump from Assist Trophy from Brawl to new character in Smash Switch.

Initially I thought Rex + Pyra/Mythra from Xenoblade 2 together like Rosalina and Luma would be awesome (and I still do. Still my top pick), but I'd also like to entertain the idea of Pyra/Mythra alone, like how Robin became the pick over Chrom despite Pair Up being such an integral part of Awakening.

ARMS candidate is likely as well.

As much as I hate to admit it, some sort of Labo representation actually has a chance because it would fit that joke character we've had since Melee.

Chibi-Robo can also work, I suppose. Not sure how since I've never played the games, but perhaps.

If they want to pull a Pit from Brawl or Duck Hunt from Smash 4, they can bring back Mike from StarTropics as that "old character no one remembers".

There's not much else I can think of, to be honest. Not enough to fill a top 10, but I don't think you need to. I'm personally very conservative with what I expect and want.

On a serious note, I don't see why Nintendo can't put out a separate D-Pad Joy-Con. It would be a peripheral that wouldn't even be required for anything considering the D-Pad still works as a D-Pad.

Heck, I even prefer the Joy-Con D-Pad for menu navigation and some platformers like Sonic Mania.

Re: Soapbox: Switch Continues To Give Older Games A Second (Or Third) Chance At Redemption

EvilLucario

Hey, bring on the ports. I'll just vote with my wallet and pick and choose which ports I want.

Even an ideal world where we'd be showered with new games everywhere, ports help introduce old games to a new audience that missed the game first time around. I passed on Xenoblade 1 when it first came out since I fell out of console gaming and back into handheld games and MMOs, but when it was rereleased for the Wii U Virtual Console, I picked up the game and quickly fell in love with it.

Re: Nintendo Wants To Make Greater Use Of Downloadable Content In The Future

EvilLucario

DLC isn't inherently evil or good. If it simply adds to a base, completed game, that's cool. I may not be interested, but if I want more game I'll buy it and have my fun.

I bought the Xenoblade 2 Season Pass because I know I want to play more of the game, but I passed on the BotW DLC because what's already there satisfied me already and I wasn't interested in the other shrines or challenges presented.

Re: Review: Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology (3DS)

EvilLucario

I find it funny that the original release came out right as the DS was being phased out, and now this rerelease came out right as the 3DS is currently being put on the backburner.

For all the time-related stuff in the game, Atlus sure didn't do this game much favors in terms of timely releases lol.

Re: Nintendo Announces Labo, A Range Of Interactive DIY Toys For Switch

EvilLucario

Huh... this actually looks really interesting, more than what I expected.

To those that don't like it, remember what this is intended for and if it can appeal to them - young kids. If it does its job, who are we to really judge? Games like Prime 4 and Zelda will still be there to scratch our itch for "core" experience, it's not like this is the only thing Nintendo's making (hopefully).

I'm sure I can already see the "core PS4/Xbox One" userbase making fun of this, but think of the demographic and what it's actually targeting first.

And as a college student who's over the peripheral nonsense of the Wii era, this actually looks pretty fun.

Re: Review: Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (Switch)

EvilLucario

Also it saddens me that people don't like XCX just because the main story and characters were not as good. Yeah, it was undercooked. But the gameplay is fine-tuned in almost all the right areas. On foot gameplay is deep and fast paced and pretty much overtakes XC1's combat in terms of complexity and fun. XC1's combat is still great, but XCX is on a whole different planet.

Re: Review: Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (Switch)

EvilLucario

@maruse As someone who used to be in that position:

Playing the game and watching gameplay are two very, very different things. More so than any other game barring strategy games. Watching gameplay is not going to convince people, actually playing the game will.

At the very least, emulate XC1 on Dolphin as that has the most in line in terms of structure to XC2.
