A brand new camera for the Nintendo Switch 2 will put gamers into their games in all new ways, according to the latest Nintendo Direct.
With lots of footage of a group of players seamlessly enjoying the all-new Mario Kart World and a few other new titles with their avatars, faces, and voices included - via the all-new Game Chat - to give you new ways to interact with pals.
It follows a trend we're seeing that points to an online-focused, multiplayer-friendly setup for Switch 2, and the camera itself continues the sleek design of the new console with its slim, glossy black frame.
Here are some more official details:
Nintendo Switch 2 Camera
MSRP*: $49.99
A dedicated USB-C® camera made especially for Nintendo Switch 2.
Includes one USB-C® charging cable.
Whether in TV mode, tabletop mode, or handheld mode, you can video chat with friends or use other in-game camera features by plugging this camera into the USB-C® port on top of the system.
Place the Nintendo Switch 2 camera wherever you like and adjust its angle to get the best shot. The lens can capture a wide view, too, so even big rooms or groups of people can get in on the fun!
Its compact size makes the camera easy to move and place where you need it to be. The wide-angle lens can be freely adjusted to get everyone in on the action, no matter the room size. Plus, a high-sensitivity image sensor can adjust the brightness automatically to detect faces.
When you're not using the camera, you can cover the lens with the built-in privacy shutter.
Looking forward to camera-hijinks with pals on Switch 2? Let us know!

I've always wanted Nintendo to watch me while I sleep
Racists, misogynists, and overall toxic people will more than likely ruin this. I'm already dreading it.
I hope they allow us to disable it.
Didn't expect also a camera for the chat function (and more when developers implement it as seen in the Switch 2 edition of Jamboree), pretty cool surprise!
@caseyyy You can just... not buy the camera in the first place?
Nintendo making a Zoom clone for the Switch 2 OS was not on my bingo sheet whatsoever but I can't lie: it seems like they've actually done a pretty bang-up job with it! Doubt it'd be something I use or anything but built-in voice/video chat is awesome regardless.
I can't even begin to imagine how toxic something like Splatoon or Mario Party will get with it though XD
It looks like a fun addition. Reminds me of the DSi camera shenanigans.
But honestly, this should've been an integrated function, and not sold separately.
I’m happy for the voice chat, but maybe I speak for most peeps who’ve been gaming since before the NES — camera chat isn’t the most appealing feature.
Save it for the young and attractive! 😅
@AngelSlayer no I mean not seeing it when others enable it:.
So... What about handheld mode?
Looks like Nintendo is finally relaxing their tight grip and just giving us the ability to speak to random creeps online if we so choose (I do not)
People here seem to think this feature lets you talk to random people online... It looked more to me like you can only talk to your friends with it.
I wonder if it can be used as a sort of sensor bar for games with pointer controls.
I was hoping for a smaller top USB attached camera with motion tracking, but this will do.
Guessing it will be friends only for safety & I'm happy with that
@Chlocean It looks like friends only from what they showed.
It's cool, but given high price of games, console, and peripherals, my hunch is it won't sell.
This could be cool. It should be included at the price they're selling this for and because they're making the "C" button a big highlight of the new system. But what will actually happen is that this will be overpriced so the userbase will be small and this social side that they put a lot of focus on during the direct will see less support than it deserves.
People are talking about all of the toxic possibilities of this, but is this even available for general online stuff? I don't know if the specified, but I figured this is the kind of thing you'd use with your group of friends you're playing with remotely. It fits this generation perfectly. I guess I'm getting old at this point so I may be off on this, but is it not pretty common to sit in a voice chat room with friends while playing a game? This seemed targeted exactly at that group.
@BTB20 Hasn't stopped me from trading with reddit randos on Animal Crossing back on Wii. But yea, it's still gonna be a short leash which I'm okay with 🫶
Was hoping for native twitch integration but look I am an absolute clown so
The absolute last thing I want to do in my games is look at people.
@caseyyy You could always just add the people you know. It’s Nintendo. More than likely you have to exchange friend codes to use it anyway.
@Riff-the-Don It does have motion tracking. Didn’t you see the Mario Party trailer?
Welcome back, Kinect.
Big Nintendo Brother will always watch over you!
What an odd accessory. I have my doubts that this will be a success, but who knows
@brandonbwii I must have missed that part, I’ll be rewatching the Direct again (to see some of the small print parts) so I’ll catch it then but thank you 🙂
I'm sorry to complain but I'm not a real fan of this idea because all they're trying to do now is copy Microsoft
Oh boy, there are so many reasons this can turn out bad. Check the PlayStation early cameras... really lots of creepy people and freaks out there...
@Riff-the-Don No problem
