Officially Licensed 'The Legend of Zelda Collector's Edition' Chess Set Now Available For Pre-Order

Well, my mother (who is a Legend of Zelda fan) has wanted to play more board games with me, so I'll definitely have to try to get my hands on this! It's the best of both worlds!

[EDIT]: Apparently, it looks like USAopoly actually came out with a Legend of Zelda-themed chess set back in 2017 (according to a Nintendo Life article that links to this one), and it also appears to be be based on Ocarina of Time. I wonder if this current set is a reprint/rerelease of that one?

I still have the Chess set I've had since childhood, and it's still pretty much unplayed. What a waste.

I don't need this but will likely still try to get one. Any UK places likely to stock it or does it need to be imported from the US?

Also, I know it's because Link is the main character and all, but he should've been the knight (riding Epona), with King Rhoam as, well, the king. Just a minor nitpick, it's still a really solid looking set.

I'm pleasantly surprised by the price! Might have to look into getting myself a set, as I'd love to play some chess with my beloved.

@AstroTheGamosian I think this must have been around for decades and intermittently reprinted, otherwise it would be based on a more recent game or mix content from different games.

Interesting to see that Nintendo is pushing such specific Ocarina of Time theming in the Zelda merchandising. Maybe the rumors about the movie being largely based on OoT are true. With that said, the choice of pieces here is questionable. Eight Navis? Twinrova?

This came out years ago but was very hard to get hold of. I know because I paid some crazy price on ebay for it not too long back.

It's nicely done, I think I'd prefer something a little less literal and a bit more abstracted out for the pieces. But I expect I'm in the minority there.

Beautiful! I want this, but realistically it would only collect dust most of the time. I very rarely am in settings where I can play board games with others.

I have this set. Didn’t know it went out of print. License must have gotten renewed.

I already have Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics. I never need to buy another chess set ever again.
For real though, I'm not too big on themed chess sets, so I'll probably skip this one.

The board they sit on is just pathetic I expected a better base for the chess pieces to sit on?

It's cool-looking but I think telling the pieces apart would be confusing. The hero side queen (Zelda) looks a lot like the bisbop (Impa) at a glance. And the fat goron rook seems to most parallel the chunky enemy darknut, who's the bishop.

Love the gold Navi the Fairy pieces.

@sethfranum a better board will increase the price. These are already vinyl, lower quality pieces. And the majority of the cost goes into their mold, the licensing and the packaging. Many that collect chess pieces have a board(s) or table already. And if not this is an entry level set not designed for longevity.

@Tyranexx I play alone or boot up a chess game and use a board to mimic what is on screen (sometimes that helps me think/plan better). But I also collect chess sets so take that with a bucket of salt.

@Ryu_Niiyama No excuse as this is Zelda, they can't even make it worth the money. No this is pathetic Zelda fans would still buy it.

@sethfranum it’s USAopoly. They are quickly mass produced board games. Be it zelda, mario or lord of the rings. This is a common practice for an entry level novelty chess set. This is not a collector’s level set as those cost hundreds of dollars (example: street fighter anniversary set was Edit: found my order paid around 150 and it’s heavy as heck.). This is a novelty set to give to a fan with an interest in chess. The “worth” of the product is subjective to the buyer. Have a nice day.

I have the 2017 edition of this. It's very meh, to be honest.

The figures are light plastic, the board has a huge fold in the middle, and even the window on the front of the packaging isn't glued on. I wasn't expecting marble pieces or anything but it just doesn't feel like it was worth the price. It feels more like a stylized 90s board game.

This is pretty cool! Too bad they don't play sound effects when you move the pieces. Particularly with 8 Navi pawns. 😂

Oh man, you don't know how to play chess?? It's quite fun and not too complicated to learn the basics, I'd say. I don't know any advanced play. What about Clubhouse Games, it has chess, right? Someone GameShare it with PJ!

@Tyranexx No Problem. Been playing that way for decades… it’s fun imo. I still have a computer that can run the old chessmaster 9000 game and that’s my favorite AI opponent ( I use modern games as well). When I was a teen I had a small cheap chessboard (the nice marble board belonged to my elder brother ) next to my monitor. Now I have a chess table on the right side of my couch. Used to play mental chess (we kept a sheet of paper that we updated with the moves at the start and end of class) against a buddy in high school. Taught me the chess notation way faster that way. While you can find folks to play chess with IRL it’s super hard to find shogi players that way so still my favorite way to get in a game. Plus it is easier on my eye.

Edit. I just realized how many of my hobbies are my brother’s fault. That man owes me money.

The board looks kind of cheap. Probably best to buy for the pieces and get a custom board made lol.

@Yosher Or Link should have been the Queen, because it's the strongest piece.

@SmaggTheSmug That sounds correct and incorrect and then correct again for some reason.

@Yosher In some languages the Queen piece is male and given the name for a chancellor or military leader (iirc originally it was the Vizier and in Polish it's sometimes called Hetman). And I remember how in the first Harry Potter movie it was a hulking knight in full plate.
Link being in that role with Zelda as the King would make more sense. But because both pieces already exist it's a matter of a simple swap.

@Ryu_Niiyama It's admittedly been many years since I've played chess (virtually or in person); I can't for the life of me remember which computer chess game I played on school computers back in the day. Chess is a game I've increasingly been interested in revisiting lately. This set might be it. Good call on Chessmaster 9000; I've heard that's a fun one! Love the mental chess story; that would have definitely been fun to look forward to updating between classes.

@AstroTheGamosian Yeah, it's a reprint but with a different box/packaging. The board and pieces are identical to the 2017 release.
