Update []: Good news! With online reports indicating that multiplayer is now functional, we've booted up our copy of No Man's Sky and can confirm that online is now fully working. Hooray! No word from Hello Games thus far, but hey, maybe they were just busy getting it sorted. See you in space, fellow travellers...
Original Story: Well, the big new Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade of Hello Games' ever-evolving No Man's Sky is now in the wild, and it's certainly looking like a much slicker, smoother experience on Nintendo's powered-up platform. Indeed, we're planning a full review in due course, so sit tight on that while we work our way through the launch games.
However! It appears all is not well with this new version of the game. We guess bugs are to be expected with titles of this size on platforms this new, though this is quite a biggie. Indeed, as of right now, the multiplayer aspect of the game, which includes playing online with pals, as well as being tied to other in-game discovery elements, seems to be completely broken.

After seeing reports online, we jumped in and ran into the issue ourselves, with our game telling us that it has no connection to any matchmaking services, as shown in our pic above. As it turns out, it's been a whole thing since the game dropped a few days ago, with players taking to various forums and social media to voice their concerns having run into the exact same issue.
The woes continue, too, as it seems cross-saves are also causing issues, although this one is easier to explain, as it's due to various platforms running on different numbered versions of the game. So, we'll need to wait for the Switch 2 version to be brought in line, it seems, to fix that one.
We've reached out to Hello Games about the issues, and will update you as soon as we hear anything. We do reckon they'll be getting this snafu sorted fairly quick-smart, though, given it's quite a serious one.
Have you had any issues with No Man's Sky on Switch 2? Make sure to let us know!

Unfortunate, but I have no doubt that they'll eventually fix it and most likely sooner rather than later - when they do so (and of course I also have the time for it as usual) I'm looking forward to finally playing No Man's Sky myself!
I was just about to boot up the Switch 2 version of this game after more than a year’s hiatus to see how it looks!
@Picola-Wicola Fingers crossed it gets sorted quickly.
A rare L from Hello Games. I’m sure they will get it sorted though.
Maybe they really did have deaf kids instead of dev kits all this time!
They'll sort it out quickly, devs of this game are insane. I double dipped on Switch and GOG.
I am gonna try, but knowing them they will fix it.
Is the multiplayer exclusive to Switch2 ?
Iirc this gsme didn't have a mp on Switch1 for the longest time...
@Alcea Switch has lacked synchronous multiplayer like meeting players in real time and doing co-op stuff, but you can still discover and interact with other people's bases, beacons and communication stations.
yeah i tried mine today, immediately disabled and reverted my save after it broke it and i'm back in action thankfully
I was so looking forward to this, as the only 'Switch 2' game on my new Switch 2, but with the cross-save function not working, I can't really play it, as I'm not starting over again.
Guys....I just played this for hours last night and my oh my is it beautiful...I cannot believe this game exists on a handheld that performs as well and looks as good as it does!
@AZYotes5013 yeah, I've got about 13 hours in. It's still worth playing while they sort it out, so long as you're starting a new game anyway. I hadn't played in years so it's been amazing getting back in.
I just started a new save today (apart from my Steam save). The dev team are great so I’m sure this will get patched pretty quickly.
Double dipped as soon as I saw a switch 2 version, and it was on sale too! My cloud save got loaded fine, just too busy with Mario kart and DELTARUNE to give this a spin lol. The bit I’ve played is very impressive though!
It works now, seems fixed. At least for me anyway.
I keep seeing that game oftenly have serious issue and got patched and updated so many times, then another new version get released and get another patches and updates.
No Man's Sky seems like unplayable game due to crash issue and other issues that I have never knew before.
@Anti-Matter that might be the case with Nintendo but I’ve very rarely encountered an issue with the game on my PC.
I have plenty of other games to play on Switch 2 for now, including continuing my PC cross-save of Cyberpunk, however it's honestly mind boggling to me that there are cross save snafus happening on day one. I picked the game up because of the excellent sale, but the only thought in my head was that I wanted to continue my PS5 save. I had to do research and jump through a bunch of hoops to get the cross save over to the Switch 2 (including installing the damn game on my PS5 and updating it again), only to find out that the PS5 version was apparently updated literally a day before the Switch 2 launch, rendering my cross save completely bunk.
How dumb is that Hello Games?!
Yep this is Nintendo Online alright. Can’t say i am surprised since Nintendo has bad reputation regarding online.
I was never ask fan of mutilplayer games. Other players only cause unnecessary havoc or ruining the fun.
@Anti-Matter but is this a game you would play anyway?
Apart from the bumpy start which was very much a situation caused by Sony pushing the release early, No Mans Sky is one of the most supported games out there.
Most updates are new content and fixes seem quickly resolved.
I sadly have not been able to enjoy NMS on S2... I downloaded the upgrade pack and loaded up my cart and the game doesn't finish loading my freighter, my (very small and bare-bones) bases, and other parts of the game world. I've tried deleting everything NMS-related except my save data and reinstalled the updates and upgrade pack, and same result. The freighter not loading up fully is especially annoying. I'll have to wait for a patch; hopefully the multi-player patch resolves this too. Plenty of other things to play though, but I was really looking forward to seeing what Hello Games would do with NMS on S2. Hopefully they resolve this soon because what I was able to see looked beautiful.
Just got my cartridge right before I saw this. Looking forward to playing this game tonight. I don’t think either of these issues will affect me, but glad to hear they’re likely to sort it out quickly. Not being a big fan of racing games this will be the first thing I really sink my teeth into on Switch 2!
@Anti-Matter people have been playing on switch for 3 years, and the game is like 8 years old. It is an ever evolving game that is on a bunch of different platforms making it complex to give everyone a similar experience. It'll be ok in a few days, for good or bad games get patched all the time. At least we dont have to wait for a second shipment of cartridges for a patch. Life sim games are similar and can have issues too.
I've updated the story now, seems they've got it sorted!
@Anti-Matter I've been playing No Man's Sky since it launched on Switch 1 and it's never been unplayable. Since it's a game where developer constantly releases new content and improvements in free updates, sometimes those updates might cause issues, but they are typically solved in the next patch.
And TBH, I'd much rather choose a game where you're constantly getting free new content and visual/UI improvements, even if there's occasional issues (which will be fixed anyway), than a game where you have to pay for such updates. For example, Nintendo is charging 10 euros for the BotW and TotW Switch 2 upgrades if you own the Switch 1 version, whereas Hello Games are giving us a much more substantial Switch 2 upgrade for 0 euros.
@Anti-Matter I had 3 crashes in like 30 hours on Switch 2. Patch is also on its way.
