Nearly A Decade After Its Initial Release, SOMA Gets Its First Switch Trailer

Better late than never

Remember SOMA? The survival horror game that initially launched back in September 2015? Well, it's finally coming to the Nintendo Switch thanks to a collaboration between Frictional Games and Abylight Studios.

The debut trailer has just launched and, we'll be honest, it looks a little rough around the edges. It's natural for a game that places such emphasis on visuals and atmsphere to receive a few notable compromises for the Switch, but with the Switch 2 launching next week at the time of writing, we can't help but feel that maybe this one should have been kept back for a bit longer.

Regardless, we're happy that Nintendo fans will finally get to give it a go. Frictional games is perhaps best known for the Amnesia series, but SOMA is a solid survival horror in its own right, mixing exploration, stealth, and puzzle-solving to great effect.

Frictional Games and Abylight Studios are also planning to launch Amnesia: The Bunker and Amnesia: ReBIrth for the Nintendo Switch at some point in 2025, though specific release dates have yet to be announced.

Great that Switch players will still have games like these to look forward to, though I do hope they receive Switch 2 patches down the line

Soma is very good but will only get it when/if a Switch 2 update gets announced (with a firm date)

Too late, already replayed SOMA last year on PS4. It's incredible as always. I'd go for a Switch 2 version but my next replay won't be for another year or two.

However, I'm super happy for the Nintendo-only households that will be able to experience one of the most thought-provoking plots in any game I've seen.

Would be cool for this to get a Switch 2 upgrade so everyone would be happy - that said, I'm glad to see this get released at the very least on Switch in the first place for those interested in it (not me included, but still)!

SOMA is such an underrated game.

In my humble opinion, which counts for naught I know, this is Frictional’s best story. Bunker is their best game but SOMA is the best story they’ve ever told. It asks some very existential and, quite frankly disturbing questions.

Played all of Frictional's games up to SOMA last year. Gameplay wise SOMA doesn't do much to separate itself from your stock standard horror themed walking sim, but it makes up for that with outstanding writing and presentation. Without spoiling anything the game hosts some pretty heavy topics and makes you an active participant in them. Solid stuff, I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't played it yet.

If you want something more gamey from this team try Penumbra Overture. It's not much of a horror game but it puts your logic skills to the test more than any game that comes after (though The Bunker looks similar from what I've seen of it WHILE also being plenty scary, so you could try that instead).

One of the best games I've played. It's an Adventure game, minus the pointing and clicking. Fun logic puzzles, unmatched atmosphere, and fascinating story. The stealth portions are extremely basic, by design. (I mean, more basic than Metal Gear 2 from 1990.) But they don't get in the way. It's a remarkable experience.

If you like this, I also recommend Still Wakes the Deep, from the makers of Dear Esther. It's more like SOMA than Dear Esther, though. (Chinese Room did, after all, do one of the Amnesia games.) And has much better stealth sequences. (Though the story and overall emotional impact aren't quite at SOMA's level.)

Are these "a little rough edges" in the room with us right now? Because I'm struggling to pick them up in the video. Zero reasons to "keep it back" until Gen 10, but those interested can still play it there, with or without added "Switch 2 edition" placebo.
