Mortal Kombat 1 Looks To Be Winding Down Support With The 'Definitive Edition'

Honestly, if this goes on sale I'll pick it up. I played through the story and thought it was fine, but the other one player mode didn't interest me at all, and would rather just do ladders and stuff to get extra stuff. So...time will tell.

Fatality! Not sure what they’ll now with MK as they’re boxed into a corner pretty well, cant see them not trying to pivot away from the mess they were attempting with this one, maybe they’ll finally do another Injustice to give them the time to figure this out.

The real question is: what's next for Shiver?

This is why I never buy an MK game at launch. Just wait for the inevitable Definitive version

Port this to Switch 2 and then maybe so.

Benefit of hindsight I really wish I had skipped MK1. The gameplay's fun enough (though the Kameo system was a major mistake that just overcomplicates things when a big part of the appeal of MK is the simplicity) but it's just such a giant pile of nothing when you get past that. And the story is a total mess.

Feel like the best course of action for the next game would be to just do another new timeline that's pretty much just close enough to 11 but incorporating the aspects of 1 people liked like antihero Baraka and Reptile. For the most part the new setting and cast just isn't as interesting.

Hopefully this gets patched for Switch 2. The graphics and glitches are horrendous

Mortal Kombat's virtually never done that? 3, 4, Deadly Alliance, Deception, and Armageddon ALL got rereleases that added new characters (all of those but Deadly Alliance and Armageddon more than one time at that), to say nothing of arcade reissues. The only game that ever got launched in its complete state was DC Universe and that's only because Midway went under before they could release Quan Chi and Harley Quinn.

@tdub154420 : What drives me crazy is that people defend DLC because "iT's ChEaPeR ThAN bUyiNg A NeW gAmE!" when it really bloody isn't. Many "season passes" cost as much as a whole new game (sometimes even more!) and for only a tiny, tiny fraction of the base game's content.

Just look at Smash Ultimate with its obscenely overpriced DLC, and all for a measly 11 new characters (plus overpriced costumes). I would much, much rather have just bought revised releases with everything on the cart like we used to get back in the day.

With Nintendo having discontinued their gold points scheme, I have no intention of buying any DLC at all on Switch 2, and with storage being so much more expensive (and limited) thanks to the new microSD Express format, I'll likely avoid most, if not all games that have "season passes" and the like also, as such games will inevitably receive bulky updates that contain the DLC data regardless of whether you intend to buy it.

@Lizuka : The difference is that you got a complete product every time (no updates), and you didn't have to set aside storage for content that you had no intention of buying in the first place.

Plus you could sell/gift your old copy if you felt that the new version rendered previous ones obsolete.

I might be keen on MK1 if we get a Switch 2 release with absolutely everything on the cart, but otherwise, no sale.

The story was okay. I preferred 11 over 1, and 10 over 11... But 1's story wasn't the worst.
And the guest characters are honestly great. Not the best mix in terms of variety, but definitely awesome for fans of said franchises.

Kameos are cool, but definitely not the best gimmick of the MK series... If anything, it should be integrated permanently into the series (to throw in the characters that'll never be put into the game anyways) - rather than a one-time gimmick.

@MrDocena I can't imagine there's any chance at all they'll ever do Kameos again. Feel like it's a thing you can definitely point to as being part of why the more casual audience didn't click with MK as much as usual this time around, and you can tell they knew it wasn't working as a selling point because they suddenly went from having five of them in the first set of DLC to having one unannounced one in the second. I'm guessing it's just going to be written off as an experiment that didn't work.

Good. Now they can focus on giving us Ultimate MK3 on Switch.

Actually, a remastered 1-3 release would be quite swell.

@tdub154420 Baffling to say that about this of all series. UMK3? MK Gold? Never mind all the arcade revisions over the years. This is nothing new for Mortal Kombat.

It's too bad this is digital only. I would had traded my physical copy of the base game for this much more polish complete version in physical form.

@AllBLK I mean it's basically like FIFA or COD in that you buy the latest and have the most fun in the year around launch while waiting for new content/next version

I just wish NRS would break from WB and/or just make that horror fighting game I've wanted since MK IX. Even just remake MK IX. Just leave MK alone, please.

@TheBoilerman Personally I'd way rather have a remaster of 9. Though really I wouldn't object to just porting all of them to modern consoles, is pretty ridiculous that 1-4 are only on GOG and Deadly Alliance through 9 aren't available anywhere. Like at least stick the PS2 games up on PSN or something.

A shame... Avoiding to use it again is like avoiding Assists and Echo Fighters combined.
You remove an element that has been tried and tested in other games [Assists], while also removing a scapegoat function that excuses the lack of detailed focus on a fan-favorite (but not plot relevant / mechanics balanced) returning character [Echo Fighter].

Seemed like a safe natural evolution to the series.

Same lie as with Mortal Kombat 11, where they said it would be the longest supported game.

Not sure if I want an Injustice 3 from them at this point. WB's gaming division has proved themselves to be woefully incompetent. Between MK1, Kill The Justice League, and Multiversus, absolutely nothing they've made recently has gone well aside from Hogwarts.

And it's telling which of these games was the most successful because Hogwarts is the only one of the four so far to be confirmed to have a Switch 2 edition.

@AllBLK I do that with every fighting game. They posted this news as if it was a bad thing, but for me it means the wait is over.

I might get this for Switch 2, if it comes, but I'll hold off with the regular Switch edition, since it has so many performance issues and graphical downgrades

Throwing my hat in the ring amongst the other comments asking for a Switch 2 version.

I’d be happy with a full Switch 2 edition, or even if they just patched the Switch version to clean up the visuals, performance and bugs. A PS4 level MK1 on Switch 2 would be great.

If they do a Switch 2 release of this, I'm betting it'll be a Game-Key card since WB Games loves to cheap out as much as possible.

@SalvorHardin They need to go back to basics. HD reboots of the first three. Or even a HD reboot of Mortal Kombat 360 version, that was an excellent version. I still don't understand why we don't have the arcade collection on modern systems. Surely a simple and lucrative port.

not sure how this effects Switch owners, but one of the big problems with MK1 was the ludicrous size of the game, on Xbox 186gb WITH THE EXTRA REQUIRED DOWNLOAD.

While the earlier MKX or XL that I HAVE IS AROUND 50GB .

yes i have both installed, but as i need the space in the future across my drives , MK1 will be deleted first as MKX is the more rounder content filled game.

I f i had bothered to see how big the install was before hand i must say i would have never have bought it , and I only paid £15 for a new sealed copy of MK1 .

When does a fighting game need to be nearly 200 gb , baffles me.

I'll wait for the Switch 2 version.

Now that I have a PS5, I'll wait for a big sale of this definitive edition. It's not worth much

It costs significantly more than the base game to download all of the DLC, which amounts to a measly 11 characters plus some Mii costumes. What exotic herbs are you smoking?

A separate revised edition with the extra content would have been cheaper for everybody over buying the DLC separately.

I don't like dlc in fighters. For guest characters outside of the franchise, whatever. But not for the actual characters.

I think they need a proper full reboot at this point, they wasted their opportunity by making this a MK11 sequel built on Multiverse shenanigans, with many questionable and controversial decisions that don't feel like permanent changes for the franchise (ej. Kuai Liang being Scorpion & random human Shinnok). Reminds me of the issues MK9-10 caused with killing the vast majority of the main cast between them, leaving them stuck to make a reset with MK11 (itself needing to focus on time shenanigans to have classic characters return).
