Full Game List Revealed For Atari's Upcoming Bubsy Collection

They did it, they really did it.

All of Classic Bubsy on modern systems, even Bubsy 3D.....

It is depressing how they insist on keeping this series that nobody has any love or respect for alive. They are trying so hard to sell something that has been trash since its conception. Let this failed mascot platformer series die already, and move on to something that actually matters.

I liked these games as a kid. I liked going down the water slides. Yeah they aren’t good… but are they really that bad?

Hmmm, would love to have been in the pitch meeting for this. "So...here's a bunch of generally hated games which perfectly showcased how not to jump on the 2D mascot platformer bandwagon of the 90s. Then a further example of how to transition to 3D with all the grace of a broken shopping trolley. We'd like $2 million to emulate and ship this dumpster fire to an audience of about..err, 12-15 retro collectors..Gentlemen, thank you"

@MSaturn you probably have some memories of bubsy 1, but most of its (hilariously bad) fame came from Bubsy 3D. Watch it on youtube and enjoy.

@Zufolobelisk Hell, I wanna see how nuts the achievement/trophy lists are, go nuts and make beat 3D without save states or rewind a requirement.

The fact we exist in a timeline where we're getting a nearly full legacy collection of Bubsy, including a game that is often cited as one of the worst games ever made, but can't even get Ubisoft to give us a single modern port of any of the Rayman games that isn't Legends never ceases to depress and confuse me all at once.

I know Bubsy isn't great, but I've never played any of them, and I am somewhat curious. I've seen gameplay of Bubsy 3D on youtube before when watching videos about game history and all that, so I know what to expect, but it might be interesting to try it out one of these days just for the heck of it.

Not the first time LRG put out a trash collection to cash in on nostalgia. That said there's probably enough of a fan base to justify this one.

Wow I didn't expect for Atari to own Bubsy now but here it is. Glad they'll include the exclusive Atari Jaguar game this time, that was one of the worst game that everyone definitely needs to play alongside the awful PlayStation game.

I just hope classic Bubsy's return doesn't end up in a CATastrophe.

I'm not sure that any of the Busby games are worth playing in 2025 for anything other than academic research purposes though. The first game is a good marketing case study (and whilst not especially good not as absolutely offensively bad as the reputation forged by later games would have you believe).

I have the original release of those, so I'll be skipping this collection, but I absolutely love seeing the Jaguar game included here. Such a glorious failure of a console; I love seeing it get acknowledged.

@Zufolobelisk Honestly, I've been hoping for this IP to have its revival redemption arc for YEARS now. Partially for the comeback story, but also because it often feels like some "failed" IPs actually have potential.

Which is why it sucks that he only keeps getting brought back for nostalgia bait at best, and irony poison at worst. With a slight shift in character personality, the right artists who understand appealing character design, and experienced devs with more than a shoestring budget, Bubsy could actually be something!

Hopefully they'll fix the craptacular controls and lousy hit detection. These games are poorly made.

Lol, I'll download them (and I also download the Gex collection, only played the butchered N64 version of the first 3D game). I played the original Bubsy back in the day and loved it. Always curious about the second game (Wich supposedly has a Genesis version different from the Snes version). And now I can finally see how terrible Bubsy 3D really is! And for completionists they should really ad the last 2 Bubsy games too (I mean, the 2D game with the 3D art and the Bittrip runner clone).

On a sidenote: I wonder if the new owners of Glover still plan to finish that sequel!

Say whatever you want about Bubsy, but he really is a video game character who keeps trying — no matter what.

Bubsy in Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind was the first video game I bought for the SNES after getting it with Super Mario World and Super Mario Kart for Christmas.

It wasn't that bad, but it sure was difficult. My sister and I played through it together one weekend though. We were absolutely determined to see it finished!

After that, we never wanted to play its sequels, lol.

I'm old enough to remember when Bubsy was the whipping boy of the 16 bit era. A game that wanted so badly to be the next Mario or Sonic, and it just fell flat.

Some IPs and ideas are just meant to die. This is one of them.

Can't they just let this thing die? No one likes Bubsy. No one ever liked Bubsy. All the old Bubsy games suck and the modern ones are boring and pointless.

@Angelic_Lapras_King although this is not my first choice compilation it is good more and more retro compilations are coming out (if done with QoL improvements). My dream compilation would be NES and SNES star wars compilation as well as the N64 and Gamecube rogue squadron games. Here's dreaming!

Wow, they even threw in Bubsy 3D on here. I actually played the Genesis version of Bubsy 2 a lot back in the day. Bubsy ain’t the best series in the world, but I guess I wouldn’t mind going back to these games. Just for a little while though.

Where is that Gex collection...? I'm much more interested in that because those games actually had quality to them...

I am still unsure if they know the general perception of this character is as a punchline. It feels like they must do, surely?

I honestly think the revival of Bubsy mistakenly happened because of Jontron's video on it all those years ago.
They confused attention with affection.

@Zufolobelisk : I've thought the same of Sonic for so long. Had some fondness for it as a kid, but grew to loathe it over the last two decades. Even its "best" games aren't particularly fun to play.

Epic's long dormant Jazz Jackrabbit was fast platforming done right.

@Angelic_Lapras_King Jaguar Bubsy is the most surprising. Though if Rich Whitehouse (I believe his name was, the BigPEmu guy) isn't involved, then I can't imagine it being... the best portrayal of Jaguar Bubsy we can get.

@Zufolobelisk I actually liked the original when I rented it as a kid. It wasn't the greatest game I played but definitely wasn't the worst. I rented Bubsy II and it just felt less fun despite being more technically intricate.
The game magazine ratings when it came out were actually pretty high, though I don't know if it quite lives up to it.

I wonder if very many people on this hate bandwagon are giving their own opinions or just repeating what others say.

@Pak-Man I do remember reading of someone who said they pushed the paws button on one of the console ports of Lemmings and thought they crashed the game. They didn't catch on for days it was a PAUSE button.

I loved Bubsy 3D. Played it to death years ago. Sure, the controls felt a bit "weird" at first, but I got used it very quickly. Loved the soundtrack and the vast, colorful environments. The haters can hate all they want, I will forever support Bubsy!

When I saw Atari's listing for this collection, I thought, "Is history repeating itself again?"

As a quick recap, Accolade, the original developers of Bubsy, were bought by Infogrames around 1999. Later, Infogrames permanently acquired the rights to what remained of Atari from Hasbro, and renamed themselves Atari Inc.
Some time later, Accolade was revived ( independent) for a new Bubsy game, which again went unnoticed, and they haven't been seen again in recent years. When I saw this news, I thought Atari had bought the new Accolade. However, as I mentioned earlier, they already had the rights to Bubsy from the start. XD

People mad about this:

There are way, waaaaaaaaaay worse games than anything in this collection, all of which are maybe a couple of degrees away from being great. And for some folks they are great already.

Way worse games than this. Have you ever played Smash Bros. Brawl? In that game, a basic movement option (dashing) coin-flips to screw you over with no input from you. Bubsy's level design may be questionable and they may put offscreen threats in evil places, but at least Bubsy doesn't trip over his own feet randomly.

Who wanted this? Who is this for?

@FormerGameAddict I would love a BoF collection but only if the games got some retranslating to unify spell/location/etc. names and concepts. Not character names though: I love the Western names.

And also some of the translation hiccups besides, like the hella compressed item names in 1 and 2.

But that's a LOT of text to parse...

That said, BoF4 got a GoG release recently. It's good! You should check it out.

@axelhander there are worse games, sure, but Brawl is still something I can have fun with. I never have fun with Bubsy.

I loved and still love the first Bubsy. I used to own the SNES cart. I think the soundtrack in particular has long been under-appreciated.

@DTFaux It's true, which is why it's so unfortunate that the people who've got a hold of the Bubsy IP don't really care about it. It does have the potential to be a genuinely good series of games, but the people at the helm of this aren't taking it seriously enough.

@SillyG Very, very few Sonic games are good, honestly. The original trilogy, CD, the Advanced trilogy, the Rush games, Heroes, Unleashed, Colors, and Generations are the only ones I've ever considered high in quality. Everything else is either garbage or something nobody's played. Compare that with Mario games, where a VERY good deal of them are best-sellers. Just look at how much of an impact Super Mario Bros. Wonder had in comparison to Sonic Superstars.

I think that Bubsy is the best “mascot” game during the SNES years. Outside of Mario of course.

would be neat in that case since i found enter the gecko to be a neat game brought down by a really bad camera, i think deep cover gecko did improve on a few aspects in that regard already though.

@Zufolobelisk on the contrary. I love how it keeps coming back as a die hard. Similar to Teen Titans Go. I feel he is the Skrull of the videogame universe and will embed himself in other franchises. Just puuurfect.

Never in my days did I imagine Bundt 3D would see a re-release. What is this timeline.

They're still using the Gex parody as the key visual? That's just putting a hat on a h- don't think about it too hard Zeebor. It's Josh Fairhursts. The only people who live more in their own world than him are Melee players, and politicians.

Still, I respect the choice to put the oft-forgotten Bubsy 3 at the top of the list. It's never been ported to anything outside of the original Jaguar release, and is considered the best of the series until 6. Granted, that's with the double bell curve of being a Bubsy game that's passable to play, and being one of the precious few third-party Jaguar exclusives. A console with not very many good FIRST party games.

I hope this becomes available on Amazon like Jurassic Park Collection, in order to see it going on sale and coming home with no shipping costs whatsoever.

Aw sweet! I have so many fond memories of the first game. The rest were awful, but the first was an incredibly mediocre experience that I got to enjoy with my grandparents. I'll have to pick this up.

Oh, that's actually pretty cool! For retro re-releases, I'd love for more of these middling games getting a complete collection with historical facts that shows people why they're significant or interesting, even if they're not top tier classics.

Idk I recall enjoying the Genesis Bubsy 1 game a lot. And with the Jaguar edition included I have to say I’m in! This and the Gex collection too! We’re not always going to get what we want from the past but it’s good to know that some companies are trying to preserve the oldies be it good or bad. Accolades to Atari and LR. Accolades- see what I did there? lol

In relation to the actual article: I actually loved Bubsy as a kid. Growing up, it was easy for me to look back and admit that it REALLY wasn't that great in terms of control and gameplay... but I loved the presentation of it. It had character.
It was... all over the place. But I loved the fact that it had character.

Not going to get this collection, as I grew to realize that I really don't enjoy platformers and collectathons.... but cool for them! Yay Bubsy.

I love the 2 Bubsy games that were on the Genesis and I don't care who knows it!! I'm buying this collection!!!

I actually played it just recently and I didn't love it, but it did genuinely like it. It has it's frustrating parts and the water levels are terrible but the jumping actually feels pretty good once you get used to it. Just have patience and after two or three levels you are going to jump like a pro.

@axelhander Yeah, but they've got the sense to at least ACT like they're an honest business that cares about things like craft and game preservation, which DOES make a difference.

@CC13 They act the same as every other "honest business" and they've proven time and time again that they do NOT care about game preservation. Bad companies aren't less bad because you happen to like them.

I'll buy this for SNES Bubsy, then stay for a nostalgic trip of the original disappointment.

I’d say LR has maybe one more punt at a tongue-in-cheek collection of moderate to absolute turkeys before the idea totally fizzles due to lack of interest.

Imagine thinking of getting this when you’ve got two 80 dollar potential all-timers on the way.

Bundt on the SNES was my childhood. I held it in higher regard than both Mario and Sonic.

Not Yoshi’s Island though. I had some sense.

Cool to see. I enjoyed the Jaguar and Lynx games in Atari 50 and to me 3D is a game to experience. The others depending how awkward even for old game standards or just bad design in Bubsy games does make me curious.

3D I think is an interesting game, regardless of textures or design I think it's not that bad. Off sure but still. I mean take away the camera from Rascal and a few things like the death bubbles and it's not a bad game.

But like anyone would care to think for more then a second and go 'it's bad' without any actual thought for game design. XD It ran at 60 FPS and had publisher demands of tank controls. The death bubble and camera are easy fixes really. The dual level themes thing (not the same) is kind of like Yooka Laylee Impossible Lair in a way but back then.

But I enjoy Mort the Chicken no matter how dull that game is so I'm not exactly that picky on some games design compared to trend following bland design, I enjoy bad games and have different expectations for them.

im hoping the emulation/porting related stuff turns out well at least but yeah, i also find it interesting (in a good way) to see oddities/curiosities like this get the preservation treatment.

Just hope the devs make it the best damn bubsy collection it can be.
