Bravely Default Is Finally Freed From Its 3DS Prison, Coming To Switch 2 At Launch

Not getting at launch but will get eventually. Happy to see the new lick of paint. Hope 2 comes over as well.

This game should run pretty good on Switch

Loved this game on 3DS. Not sure if I'll be double dipping with it being one of these game key releases though. Its a small enough game to fit on an actual game card and not need to be downloaded

Game key release, huh...man this Switch 2 reveal has been an emotional rollercoaster. Such highs and incredible lows. I don't know what to feel atm.

Not interested in "game key" versions.
This could have easily been a regular Switch game.
No need to force it on Switch 2

Will wait to see what the Play-Asia situation with this game is.
If I can get a proper version, I will opt to do so.

@RupeeClock because if they release it on the switch its one more reason for a fan to not buy a switch 2. Its pure business imo.

Been wanting it ported for years, pretty much the only Switch 2 exclusive I'm presently hyped for.

Also glad they went back to the Flying Fairy subtitle, it's always been much better. Though I hope this doesn't mean they're leaving out the For the Sequel content.

If they fix the ending where you fight the bosses 48 times… I might buy it again

I was excited until I read the game key part. Talk about a wet fart.

I have a question about the game-key cards. Is the key attached to the card itself, or is it attached to your account? Because if it's the former, it means that you can at least re-sell your game-key card if you want.

This is what I'm happiest about aside from Switch 2's large technology improvements. Always feels weird to have a partial series.

I like the price, $40, so it's the same as the 3DS version when it was new. I don't like how it's exclusive to Switch 2 when I think the original Switch could handle it easily, and I CERTAINLY don't like the whole "Game-key" part of it. Until it's actually on a cart, I will not buy.

This game is a hard pass in the physical department. Game Key Cards will become useless after 20 years. I am in for Physical Media in the long haul. So once the servers are down, your SOL.

For some strange and unexplained reason, why would you buy a key card instead of buying it digital? (Other than a resell within the 20 or so years window.)

I will see what the folks in South East Asia will have physically later on once the product reaches state side.

Can I just say while I respect Square for not raising the price, the fact that optimization practices are so dire in the industry that a 3DS game can’t run on Switch 1 and can’t even fit on a 10th gen cartridge is completely unacceptable.

Despite how much I dislike the game key card concept - I struggle to understand why SE is going this route with this game outside of being cheap - I AM glad Bravely Default is getting a second chance. It's a decent JRPG with some excellent fourth wall breaking and interesting characters. There IS a part halfway through that understandably turns some people off the game, but I went into it on 3DS having a vague idea of what this was and still enjoyed myself. And there IS more to the back half than meets the eye if one looks around enough. I may be in the minority, but I found Bravely Second to be even better. Still haven't played Bravely Default II yet.

For now, I'm sticking with the 3DS version. My copy is perfectly playable and is, y'know, all on the cartridge.

Gota wait to see what packages they give out or just standard release with updates? Then I see when I can buy the game.

What's most confusing about this is the exact same production division of Square just announced a new, all on cart, combo pack of Octopath 1 + 2.

Asano has proven in multiple occasions to be the only person left at Square -Enix with any power to have a soul, so HOPEFULLY this is just a "extreme rush to meet launch window deadline" and there will be an actual release somewhere down the line.

Right now I need this lie, because Bravely HD is the only game in the launch line-up that has something close to a reasonable price tag.

Why why why is it a game key? I know that game could fit on a cartridge, easy. I thought the game key thing would be for huge games that require installs on other systems.

Also, it was my impression that game installs on PS5 and Xbox are mostly due to limitations of optical disc read speeds? Much faster to read from an SSD than a Blu-ray. That shouldn't be a problem with the fancy new Switch 2 game cards, right?

My absolute favorite 3DS game, extremely excited to pick this up. I’m mostly a digital buyer anyways so this doesn’t bother me all that much. Time to head back to Luxendarc!

Bravely Default is a great game, but I am never buying one of those game keys. It feels like something that was invented purely as a worse option to make digital games more palatable.

I winder how they're going to do the camera stuff. That was somewhat relevant to the game.

I’ll just keep mine trapped in it’s 3ds prison. Party because I won’t be able to afford a switch 2 this year, and party because both bravely default and bravely second look gorgeous in 3-d even at a low resolution. And I own both games physically.

Square Enix using a game key card for this when Cyberpunk is completely on cart is indefensible.

That being said, at $40 the digital version should be an attractive option at launch considering the prices of other Switch 2 games

So I’m going to either a) buy the foreign version that is not game key version but it’s multilingual or b) go full digital for this game since game key is pointless.

Now, we will just need Bravely Default Second (which is not the sequel) remastered.

I will definitely WON'T get it unless the game is fully in the card. Already have the 3DS version, and once you know the twist the story there is no point in playing it again. Their loss.

Bravely Default is probably my favorite Square RPG of the last 20 years (Pixel remasters notwithstanding). I'm getting it for sure.

The archivist in me wants a box and a physical copy, but that same archivist doesn't like the whole game-key thing, so I don't know WHAT to do.

It was released from the 3DS prison and now it's in the Switch 2 prison. This game should've been cross-gen or went multiplatform.

Yuck. I'll pass then. Besides, I strongly doubt they're going to give me a decent reason to play this version over the 3DS version, like better English voice acting (seriously, it was a factor in me stopping my playthrough).

@IceClimbers That's my feeling as well. This will be a good digital purchase at $40, since I will always ignore the Game-Key versions. But of course, I would appreciate the digital version to be discounted compared to the physical, since that's going to be a thing now...

I’m surprised this isn’t a Switch 2 Edition game. I don’t see why this game couldn’t run on the original Switch.

The game is not good. There is hardly any NPC’s and the story is dull as dishwater. (The skill that existed during the CHRONO Trigger/ ff6 era seems to have been lost).

I don’t get the controversy around the Game Key. Surely it’s no different to needing the disc in on PS5 after an install? I can see how preservationists might dislike it but let’s be honest: most retro gaming is done with roms and not 2nd hand carts.

If CYBERPUNK (of all games) can put the Whole game on the cart, why can't a 3DS port do the same??

@Pak-Man Yeah, I have over $4k in Switch 1 physical games. It's the only thing I've ever really collected. I don't know how to feel about these either.

It didn't look very next gen in the trailer.

@Bizzyb It is $40, whether that's the cause or the effect of its not entirely being on the cart.

@Thomystic It has to do with SE not wanting to pay for the use of a Game card and instead opting out to use a cheaper Game-key...and yes quite possibly because they are only charging $40.

This sets a terrible precedent though. Does that mean ALL Switch 2 $40 games will be on game-keys? Ugh.
