Atari and Choice Provisions, the team behind the BIT.TRIP games, have announced that Breakout Beyond is launching on Switch (and other platforms) on 25th March 2025.
We're flipping things from horizontal to vertical and going "beyond" (sorry) what Breakout has ever done before. Moving through neon-drenched levels and puzzles, it's an explosive light show that's absorbing and fun.
There are 72 levels to break your way through, and you'll get some help from special blocks that provide power-ups, boosts, and barriers. Plus, you can play with a friend in local co-op.

This is just the latest in a long line of Atari revivals that keep surprising us. We've seen Yars get a new lease of life through WayForward in Yars Rising. I, Robot is making a comeback thanks to Jeff Minter's Llamasoft. And Lunar Lander also made a return in Lunar Lander Beyond.
Are you looking forward to Breakout Beyond? Let us know in the comments.

As a kid, I spent countless hours playing Arkanoid, my favorite game back then. Now, almost 40 years later, seeing a new Breakout announced really hits me with nostalgia. Let's see what comes here.
Arkanoid on my C64 was one of the most loaded games.
But when playing this I hope you can change the controls to Tate Mode as landscape doesn't do it for me
Ooohhh, CO-OP? You got my attention now. I'm all about trippy new takes on old ideas, like Polybius or Tetris Effect.
Wasn’t this originally for the amiico?
Sooner than I expected, love to see it and I'll eventually check it out myself for sure!
I'm really excited for this one. Will probably pick it up on my VCS, though. Sorry, Switch!
Who am I kidding? I'll get both.
Yes please. Classic gameplay is classic
Need to see more to understand what it will do different from Arkanoid and Crystal Hammer. Spent a lot of hours with both. From the trailer it looks like more of the focus is on the ball itself instead of power ups for the paddle. Curious to see more. I like the art direction for sure.
Bah, now I got the song from Crystal Hammer stuck in my head. Where's the .mod file I keep on my drive?
Quite excited about this! Makes me wish we could get Galaga Legions and Space Invaders Inginity Gene for Switch.

I’m noping out until we get a paddle/spinner controller with which to play these brick-breaking games properly.
Analog stick controls just don’t feel right for me.
@Overzeal Yup. But given that the console never released, my guess is they were either let go from the exclusive contract, or the contract simply expired.
This game coming to Switch and Steam now is the reason why I will never buy the Intellivision Amico anymore.
Poor ‘yoko mode’. ‘Tate mode’ is all the rage. 😉
Will Woz get royalties?
Wow. Yea please. I’ve always loved breakout and this game looks great.
I played a lot of Breakout for PS1, in my memory it was such great fun. This looks actually fun if it's priced $10 or less
Breakout? Eh. Take or leave it. …TRAZ and Shatter were where that was at. It’s a port of Centipede Chaos I want.
I would prefer local PvP to co-op. Arkanoid Eternal Battle is great for that, I've spent many evenings playing it against my friend and I'd love to continue our competition on Breakout!
This game is worthless without a paddle controller. The new Arkanoid on Switch is basically unplayable. Is it that difficult to make one? I mean, the 2600 had them 40 years ago! Nonsense!
Most of these remakes and resurrections seem to be full of flashy effects that make it nearly impossible to focus on the gameplay. At least judging by the trailers - I find that so off-putting I never really try the games myself. Are they really as bad as they make them look? Can the effects be disabled at least? I’d be up for some brick-breaking!!
NEEDS a dial / rotary controller or I’m simply NOT buying!!!
