One of the wonders of universal controller connectivity is that it's possible to use pads created for one console on totally different systems. Back in the days of the Master System and Mega Drive, it was possible to use controllers made for other systems because, unlike Nintendo, Sega opted for an off-the-shelf controller port rather than a proprietary one.
Later, the wired Xbox 360 pad became a "go-to" option for many people as it worked over a standard USB connection. More recently, the proliferation of Bluetooth-enabled wired pads has resulted in a world where it's possible to mix-and-match controllers across a wide range of rival consoles – and that looks set to continue with the launch of the PlayStation 5.
Using the trusty 8bitdo wireless adapter – which plugs into the Switch dock's USB port – you can pair the shiny new DualSense pad to your docked Switch. The adapter allows you to connect loads of other pads, too – including the PS4 controller.
If you fancy getting your hands on one of these ahead of the PS5's launch, you can hit up the links below.

"Wow, no comments yet... why not be the first?"
Don't mind if I do!
Even if it does work, you won't be able to use all of the functions such as trackpad, speaker and adaptive triggers. Hopefully they'll make those things backwards compatible with the PS4.
"it was possible to use controllers made for other systems because, unlike Nintendo, Sega opted for an off-the-shelf controller port rather than a proprietary one"
Not really, many systems of the time used the same connector and port but were not necessarily intercompatible because of different wiring. Amstrad and MSX computers for example had the same port but used different wiring. You could however use Atari sticks on Commodore computers and it would work because the 4 directions of the stick were wired the same, same for the fire button. Sega just decided to wire their controllers in the Atari/Commodore way because it was the most widespread around the world.
I personally had a QuickShot QS-130F joystick with a slider underneath to select which system I was using it with, so that it would be compatible with pretty much everything that used the same connector.
@RudyC3 Yeah, I don't understand why there wasn't more collaboration between competing consoles so they could use the same arcade sticks and racing wheels. Nobody wants to buy one of those for each console.
Here's the problem:
8bitdo wireless adapter – which plugs into the Switch dock's USB port
Only Docked NO portable mode-so why would I even do that to use it. Sure Docking works but if it can't directly connect to the Switch and have to use 3rd party to do so is a easy pass for me.
Nice reason to buy PS5
I tried this as well over the weekend just to see and it indeed works fine. Pretty much the only device I can't get the Dualsense to work properly with is the PS4 funnily enough!!
Well.. the 8bitdo wireless adapter is made to allow other controllers to work on the Switch.. So, this isn't that unique.
@SwitchForce Is that really such a big deal? I don't think I've ever used my Switch in table top mode with the pro controller.
@SwitchForce of course it’s not as convenient, but you can use a usb a to usb c adapter to use it in tabletop.
I guess I'm in the minority and was planning to use it for things like God of War: Ragnarok and Spider-Man: Miles Morales, but this is good news for the many people who saw the ps5 unveiling and dreamed of playing Link's Awakening with it.
I'll get one when it also supports bluetooth headphones.
I have a similar adapter from Fastsnail that I got years ago (before I got my pro controller). I played BotW almost exclusively on my PS4 controller, and besides not being able to use amiibo on it, it ran incredibly well. I wonder if the version I own will be compatible with Dualsense too
@Agriculture I was using my pro controller in tabletop mode daily before we started working from home. The office is somewhat isolated, there's not really anywhere interesting to go to or do anything nearby, so lunch hour was a gaming hour for me.
I think where this is potentially useful is for multiplayer sessions, using pads for other systems you own or getting a mate to bring one with him.
@SwitchForce there's a pretty functional solution, although it involves buying both a third party Switch stand that effectively turns the type C port 90 degrees and makes it accessible to charge while sitting up, and a type-C to female type A OTG cable. Any USB device still works off the Switch's bottom USB port if you use an OTG cable.
@SwitchForce why do you even need a controller if you're playing portable only...
@SwitchForce I agree. I only play handheld but for some games it’s easier using a separate controller
@Agriculture The idea was lock-in. They didn't want you buying more systems and splitting where you bought games, making the controllers incompatible even if just by making the port a different shape or flopping a few pins was the order of the day.
@MaxiPareja Probably because the Soy Cons are awful. Portable doesn't always mean handheld.
@SwitchForce I think it is more a public service announcement rather than a "bin your pro controller and replace with a Dual sense and 8bitdo adapter" recommendation.
Good thing it took HD Rumble from Nintendo too. Haha. Makes it a good fit, eh?
@invictus4000 No longer HD but up to 8K HD Rumble. But I did hear that sony improved it.
@StevenG Often they didn't even work with new generations of consoles from the same company. Only Sony did that. If it was about locking people in into one companies products, then the Snes mouse would work on the N64. Sometimes you even had situations were some peripherals only worked with some variants of the same console. I am much more incline to think it was out of laziness they did it this way.
I have been using my PS4 controller on my Switch for awhile now. It works really well and don't have any complaints about it.
Who would want a downgrade from the pro controller?
This is a downgrade from a DualShock 4 with a back button attachment.
I will never play another console FPS without back buttons (unless it’s retro).
I mean, to each their own of course, but I couldn't play with a PS controller. Between the poor positional arrangement for the analog sticks and the face buttons using shapes instead of letters and them also being arranged in a way that doesn't make any kind of intuitive sense, I'll stick with my Switch Pro Controller thanks. For me, the biggest reason I haven't gotten into Sony's gaming ecosystem is what, in my opinion, is a consistently terrible and non-ergonomic controller design.
Again, to each their own.
Can’t wait to try the dualsense out, it’s supposed to be really rather impressive. Not that the haptics etc would be noticeable on switch games tho...
If you consider the exclusivity to playing on the dock, then this controller would theoretically still do better than Nintendo-licensed wired controllers like PowerA and Hori. I think there's a bit of an unfair comparison flying around in terms of "wireless" controllers.
@RudyC3 I'D COMPLETLEY FORGOTTEN THIS! I had a quickshot as well. One of my favorite controllers. Now so antiquated with only 2 buttons. haha But at the time, I thought I was living in the future!
That is very interesting.
I have an old, Zelda Gamecube Wii controller which connected up to the Wii remote. I got the 8bitdo adapter for that so it could work on the Switch. It works fine!
I do like that things like connections and ports are becoming more standardized. I really do not miss the days of every device having its own cables.
I love my 8bitdo wireless adapter! Switch games are way better with a PS4 controller, glad to see this continuing with the PS5 controller 😁
Now you’re playing with power, Sony power
battery life on PS controllers is MISERABLE
Neat. I'll definitely consider that as I haven't been overly happy with Nintendo's controllers.
Really, that's good news. Because before I became Nintendo fan I used to be more PlayStation fan. But my first console end up being New Nintendo 3DS XL and then Nintendo Switch, because I wanted become legal Pokémon fan. So next console I really want to buy is PlayStation 5. I actually wanted to buy it for this Christmas, but due some real life issues I end up re:prioritizing it to new PC first and PS5 next years Christmas.
I want an 8BitDo adapter now. Is there motion control support for the dual shock 4 and the Dual Sense? That would be rad!
