Poll: Box Art Brawl: Marvel Vs. Capcom 2: New Age Of Heroes (Dreamcast)

Hard to decide. America is a bit too bland, Japan is a bit too busy.

Agreed it's too bad that the European one cuts the art with the logo but I still voted for it since it uses a brighter more readable picture.

Also, why you chose Dreamcast? It's not a Nintendo platform...
And, you had more than enough opportunities to choose Guilty Gear XX ΛCore Plus Wii covers.

I've voted NA, though that isn't saying much.

I didn't know that in the year 2000 Cable was still considered such a cool character that he was made the centerpiece of the original cover art. For me he is forever associated with the crappy grimdark era Liefeld, Lee, McFarlane & co. pushed Marvel into in the late 1980s, with all of those cyborg scowls and thigh pouches.

I voted Europe cos it’s the version I have but I think they should have done it where they didn’t put the Dreamcast logo at the top like they did with powerstone and other various games where the artwork was quality I do actually prefer the US artwork but I went with the one I know best

The original Japanese art raises quite a few questions in my head, such as:

– Who is the girl in the middle of the pic and what the heck is happening to her left arm?

– Why is there a random sombrero and a Napoleon hat(?) behind Cable?

Very bad boxes when you consider that this game’s art style is otherwise perfect. The PS2 and the Xbox covers are the true winners.

Absolutely gorgeous PAL and NTSC-J boxes and so much better than the art style of the Xbox and PS2 (inferior) versions. I bought the Japanese version because you can see the complete drawing.

@mlt That is 100% an issue of that is the best scan found online. Colour saturation and clarity should never be taken into account when voting on a Box Art Brawl, because especially with older titles, there is a big chance the art shown is from a photograph or scan, and not the source graphic, hence differences in picture quality.

North American version looks better in my opinion. It immediately catches your eyes

Voted Japan because I just like that art a bit more, and it doesn't have the Dreamcast text covering a good deal of it.

Also, the Everybody's Golf article next to this one made me think. That pose on Everybody's Golf is like, one of the most used poses for a golf game. Which makes sense, it's like the pose when you think of golfing.

So maybe sometime down the line, the box-art brawl thing can be expanded upon a little? Taking various box-arts from the same gaming genre (even if it's just within the same series) and pitting those against one another. Could mix things up a little bit, though question would be how far you'd want to take that.

The Dreamcast games had beautiful box art.

It looks like the game's roster has been amalgamated into a giant many faced monster. Yeah, like the one from Kirby and the Forgotten Land. I'm still voting Japan here though, I'm not feeling the random Psylocke and Guile combo.

Definitely Japan since it takes the "everyone is here!" approach without cutting them off. None of them particularly thrill me however.

I've owned the NA version for years, so I have some nostalgic connection to it, but I think the JP version is just better. It showcases much more of the massive character roster, which is what this game is all about. I've always loved this art style, looks like the artist was drawing with pencil on some kind of textured surface.

I don't like the Japanese Art at all. NA wins by default, lol.

It desperately needs full color for what’s otherwise a cool piece of art, without that color though characters like Dr Doom are just lost in there like one of those magic eye posters.

I’m a huge Psylocke fan (her current comic run has been fun so far) so I remember seeing her caught my attention to the box art so going with US. If I didn’t know who she was or wasn’t a big marvel fan I would say the Japanese cover. Even if it is rather busy.

The modern cover is gorgeous though. I almost wanna buy it physically.

No hesitation from me. I voted for the NA cover straight away. To be clear, I found all three of these disappointing. The art itself is fine, but nothing is as dynamic as I'd expect from Marvel stuff of the time. None of these are particularly exciting. While the Japan/Euro art isn't badly executed for what it is, it's not good for a cover. Everything just blends together and nothing particularly stands out. To lump all the characters into one giant mass like that leaves a bunch of characters and important elements obscured. The NA cover is somewhat boring, but it's much more visually coherent and, to me, far more appealing.

@SalvorHardin I agree. Not sure if it's the image or scan they used for this article, but it does seem washed out. The NA cover best catches the eye when it comes to colors, but I think it suffers from less characters.

Japan and PAL's art is soooo good. Bengus's style in the series just makes everyone look so cool, especially here and the way the coloring is done just makes it look even more epic. I have no idea what Capcom was thinking for the US art. Like not only is it just character art, they chose Psylocke and Guile, the two most random choices for characters. I wonder what made them go with that compared to even using different more popular characters

I know those Capcom artists are super talented, but the Japanese / EU covers just look like fan fiction.

If not for the stupid blue stripe of the PAL version, then it would be tied between Japan and the European. But since Japan is much cleaner with just the logo in the corner, Japan had the better art.

How anyone can pick the cut and paste American "thing" is beyond me.

Japanese and European sell the large roster of playable characters better in addition to showing more artistic effort.

This was a weird era of Capcom USA where they just pulled random artwork for their box arts for some reason. I think it was Capcom vs SNK maybe that's even uglier than this.

I've always preferred original Japanese art, just like the beautiful Capcom vs SNK, compared to the crappier US/EU editions.
It might seem very busy, but I think should respect its original intended design.

I like the art style. North America wins it for being more colorful.
